Thomas thrilled with return to fold

David Thomas is excited to return to Bermuda’s Davis Cup squad and will do all he can to help the Island gain promotion in the Americas Zone group three tournament at Palmas Del Mar in Humacao, Puerto Rico.

Thomas, Bermuda’s No?1- ranked player, will join Neal Towlson, who has also returned to the squad, Gavin Manders, Jenson Bascome and Ricky Mallory, the non-playing captain and coach, in Bermuda’s travelling party on May 31.

Jack Keyes, Romar Douglas and Chris Weeks have been chosen as alternates.

The team will compete in a round-robin tournament, which runs from June 2 to 7, at the hard court at the Palmas Athletic Club.

Thomas, 25, was unable to represent the Island in Bolivia at last year’s Davis Cup because of work commitments. He said that he is more than ready to make up for lost time.

“Last year was particularly frustrating as I felt that I was playing some of the best tennis of my life,” Thomas said.

“We were hungry as a country to do well, and individually I felt that I was ready to help put Bermuda’s best foot forward. Not being able to compete with the team left a bitter taste in my mouth.”

Thomas’s appearance at the 2013 NatWest Island Games in Bermuda is the only time he has represented in the Island in the last three years.

Admitting that he had missed the camaraderie of international competition, Thomas said that he was keen to help the squad achieve their goals.

“Training with the national squad is always a privilege,” Thomas said. “To be selected to represent the Island at an international competition is not something that I take lightly. I love going into the trenches with my team-mates who I know are going to lay it all on the line.

“As a country, the goal is always to try and secure promotion to the next level up in the Davis Cup competition. Personally, it’s been a while since

“I’ve had the opportunity to represent the Island, but I’ll be looking to get a few wins under my belt.

“Confidence is key and will be important in terms of doing well, so if the team can get off to a strong start anything is possible.”

Other countries competing include Bahamas, Costa Rica, Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and host nation Puerto Rico.

Participating countries will be divided into two pools of five teams.

The winner of pool A will play-off against the runner-up in pool B, and the winner of pool B will play-off against the runner-up in pool A to determine which two nations are promoted to Americas Zone group two.

n The Bermuda Beach Tennis tournament will be part of the maiden Triangle of Beach Tennis this summer, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced.

New York will host the first tournament with Puerto Rico holding the final event.

The winners of each tournament will collect $10,000, with ITF rankings points also on the line.

The competition begins in New York from August 21 to 24, before moving to Bermuda from the 26 to 27. The dates for Puerto Rico are from 29 to 31.
