Shelly Bay Pizza House will send staff out in pairs in areas where robberies could take place following a robbery near Crawl Hill, on Monday.

And they are being forced to screen orders made by telephone more closely in the future.

The premeditated theft happened when the restaurant received a call to take two pizzas to Hamilton Parish Workman's Club.

A 17-year-old deliveryman went to the club around 8.45 p.m. but could not find the customer.

As he left the club he was beckoned into a `dark alley' where a man took the pizzas and then demanded money and the sodas he had ordered.

Police Community Relations Officer P.c. Gary Venning said: "He was flagged down by the person he assumed to be a customer. The culprit appeared to be paying for the order but then produced a knife.'' The robber then jabbed the young man in the side before escaping with the pizzas and $60 in cash.

Owner of Shelly Bay Pizza House, Mr. Franz Egenolf said: "It was a set up. It must have been the guy that called us because he was upset that the deliveryman had forgotten to take some sodas.

"We believe he was carrying a knife which he stuck in the guy's side. He then told him to get out of there. Police think he is one of the guys that hangs around that area.'' The deliveryman was not hurt in the incident. Mr. Egenolf said: "He was not hurt. He was okay when he came back but eventually it began to sink in and he was shaken up.'' It is the fifth time a pizza delivery person has been robbed over the past 12 months on the Island.

Previously the attacks involved staff from pizza businesses in Hamilton, including the old Ram's Head Restaurant and Four Star Pizza. All have involved robbers wielding machetes or baseball bats.

But it is the first time the eight-year-old Shelly Bay Pizza House has been hit by a robbery in more than two years of delivering door-to-door.

Mr. Egenolf said: "Although I feel this is a one-off and there was little we could have done to stop it, we will be more careful in the future.''
