Racer DeSilva heads for Rome
Motorcycle racer Kenneth DeSilva heads off to Rome, Italy tomorrow in pursuit of a dream of turning pro.As a client of Italian motorcycle manufacturers Stage Six, the 20-year-old Paget resident has been extended an invitation by the company to compete under their banner in the Expert 70cc Scooter class at Sunday’s Stage Six Cup at the 1,300 metre Vertibo racetrack.“They actually brought me over as a guest rider to see how I can do against other companies that are competing with their products,” DeSilva told The Royal Gazette.Sunday’s event will mark the first time the full-time motor mechanic has competed overseas.“I am taking this opportunity to do this because I’ve been Scooter champion in Bermuda for the past three years and now I want to test myself at a new level,” DeSilva said.“It’s going to be very competitive in Italy and right now there are about 35 people signed up to race in just one class alone.”DeSilva said he intended to put in a solid showing in Italy in the hope of catching the eye of scouts looking to recruit fresh talent for professional teams.“I will be going up against some big factories and if I do well other opportunities may come my way,” he said. “Motorcycle racing is very competitive in Rome where they take the sport more seriously.”Regardless of what transpires in Italy, the Bermudian racer is confident that he eventually fulfill his dream of turning pro.“I know I have what it takes to make it,” he said. “I just need to stay focused and continue to represent myself well.”DeSilva warmed up for his upcoming international commitment by taking the chequered flag in all three heats in his respective class during last weekend’s racing at Southside.“I actually decked out in the last race and got back up and still beat everybody,” he said. “But I wasn’t injured or anything like that.”As dominant as DeSilva may have been with only three races remaining in the 2011 schedule, there’s no chance anyone has of reeling in Scooter Open class leader Ricardo Wade, who holds a unassailable 327 point lead over nearest rival Carlos Cardoza. The championship has also already been decided in the Superbike, Formula and Mini GP 80 classes.Shannon Caisey, who picked up three straight wins on Sunday, has a massive 303 point lead in the Superbike class over nearest rival Bryce Place, while Kewuan Gilbert leads Ricardo Wade by 163 points. Jazari Caisey, who won all of his heats on Sunday, has an unassailable 151 point lead in the Mini GP 80 class.Championships still to be decided include the GP125, Supermoto and Mini Bike Open classes.Jordan Fletcher and Bruce DeGrilla Jr are currently tied at the top of the GP 125 class with 433 points apiece. DeGrilla picked up two wins on Sunday to keep the pressure on his rival. In the Supermoto class, Peter Terceira holds a 75-point lead over nearest rival Keanu Wilson, while Tamia Place leads Coleridge Fubler by 41 points heading into the final race day of the season.Fubler kept his championship hopes alive by claiming three wins over the weekend.
