St. David's win eight-goal thriller

St David’s 5Wolves 3Wasteful Wolves blew the chance to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup with a shocking display of finishing against St David’s at Lords yesterday. The First Division side squandered a host of gilt-edged chances as they let the Premier Division team off the hook in a game that they should have at least taken to a replay. As it was the home side ended up on the right side of an eight-goal thriller, and as well as thanking the influential Landro Minors and Otias Minors, they should give referee Elihu Holmes a big slap on the back as well.Holmes made a variety of strange decisions yesterday, but none more so than the three that saw Warriors defender Fred Sewell play the entire 90 minutes.Three times Sewell cynically hacked down Wolves players, and on only one occasion, when he went through the back of striker John Barry Nusum in the penalty area at the start of the second half, was he booked. There is no doubt that a striker of Nusum’s quality would have scored from the position he was in, and the resulting penalty, which Derrick Brangman scored to drag Wolves back to 3-2 after they had made a disasterous start to the second half, was insufficient punishment in itself.Still, Holmes was presented with an opportunity to redeem himself towards the end of the game when Sewell deliberately tripped Brangman outside the area as he raced through on goal with five minutes remaining. However, having seemed to approach Sewell with a red card in his hand, Holmes got caught up in the pushing and shoving that followed and simply forgot to show the defender a card, red or yellow.Given those two incidents Wolves might believe they are entitled to feel hard done by, but in truth they were the masters of their own destruction.Having had slightly the better of a scrappy opening, Brangman’s shot from the edge of the area with quarter of an hour gone gave them a lead they thoroughly deserved. However they handed the initiative right back two minutes later when Otis Minors strolled through a non-existent defence, and that, coupled with several misses that followed, set the tone for the rest of the match. Wolves should have been 3-1 up at the break, but Brangman shot weakly at goalkeeper Corey Richardson when Mikael Ming was unmarked, and then fired straight at Richardson when clean through.St David’s effectively won the game with two goals in three minutes at the start of the second half.First substitute Landro Minors picked out Otis Minors with an inch perfect pass that left the Wolves defence chasing shadows, and Otis Minors then turned provider when he broke clear down the right, saw his initial shot saved, only for George O’Brien to turn in the rebound. In between Sewell was given the first of his let offs when he tripped Brangman, but less than two minutes after O’Brien’s goal he brought down Nusum and Brangman stepped up to make it 3-2.Against ten-men Wolves might have been able to overcome the deficiencies in their own game, against 11 they paid for every mistake they made.Steven Bremer was caught in possession inside his own area when he tried to play football rather than hacking the ball clear, and although the ball was scrambled behind, Bremer and his fellow defenders left Landro Minors unmarked from the resulting corner and the St David’s man headed home to put his side 4-2 in front. With 20 minutes left Wolves laid seige to the St David’s goal, but Ming opted to try a flying bicycle kick at the back post when a header would have sufficed, and while Nusum’s cool finish gave them hope at 4-3, Kyle Brangman missed two chances inside the box with neither effort on target. There was something inevitable about St David’s final goal, with substitute Angelo Cannonier racing clear in the final minute to take full advantage of Wolves’ desperate push to find an equaliser.St David’s: C Richardson, A Wolfe, K Bean, A Lugo, F Sewell, T Govia (D Paynter, 37), D Albouy, F Crockwell, D Lambert (L Minors, 46), O Minors, G O’Brien (A Cannonier, 66).
