Mr. Malcolm Furbert Sr. during a 45-minute session in the Upper House.

Sen. Gerald Simons (UBP), asked that The Parliamentary Election Amendment Rules be approved at the next meeting of the Upper House and he also asked senators to take notice of the Police Tumim Report.

Afterward, Sen. Simons (UBP) added his voice to the many who have already paid tribute to the late Dr. John Stubbs who died on Tuesday afternoon.

He described Dr. Stubbs as an "outstanding Bermudian'' whose important work helped to shape the Island during the second half of this century.

"He was an outstanding Rhodes scholar and a man of many interests, who pursued each to a very high level,'' Sen. Simons said.

He added that Dr. Stubbs was also at the top of his profession as a surgeon and had introduced new medical techniques and procedures to the Country.

And that much of the credit for the way Bermuda's health care system is delivered is owed to Dr. Stubbs, who spent time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology working on a Masters degree.

"I am personally indebted to Dr. Stubbs who was instrumental in getting the writing to read programme in schools started.

"He was a self confessed news addict who watched the television talk shows regularly and was an authority on current topics affecting the world.'' Sen. Grant Gibbons , who is also current Minister of Management and Technology, praised Dr. Stubbs for his foresight and work in the area of telecommunications.

"I have found him very helpful on issues...I saw him last week Sunday night and though he was experiencing difficulty swallowing, his mind was active and he was making suggestions on what I could do in certain areas.'' Several other Senators including Senate President the Hon. Albert Jackson (Ind), Sen. Norma Astwood (Ind), Sen. Gary Pitman (UBP), Sen. Yvette Swan (UBP), Sen. Alf Oughton (Ind), Sen. Milton Scott (PLP) and Sen. Neletha Butterfield (PLP), also wished to be associated with these remarks regarding Dr. Stubbs.

Sen. Jackson said that Dr. Stubbs, his family and colleagues were instrumental in promoting the idea of integration in Bermuda at a time when the Island was "undergoing massive social changes.'' He said Dr. Stubbs had worked to eliminate many of the barriers that existed.

Senators also expressed condolences to the family of the late Mr. Malcolm Furbert Sr.

Sen. Alf Oughton (Ind) said he had known Mr. Furbert for many years and he was a "fine, outstanding gentleman.'' Sen. Neletha Butterfield (PLP) said that Mr. Furbert had educated himself and had climbed up the ranks of the Bermuda branch of the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada.

And along with his personal achievements, Sen. Butterfield said Mr. Furbert had also helped to educate his brothers and sisters.

While noted for his competence and professionalism in his work, Sen.

Butterfield said that Mr. Furbert was also a top jockey who raced at the Shelly Bay race track.

Senators Terry Lister and Milton Scott also wished to be associated with those remarks.

On a happier note, Sen. Simmons asked fellow senators to send congratulations to Mr. Graham Garton who directed the Bermuda Philharmonic's concert in St.

George's and Dockyard.

Sen. Simons said that the concerts were growing in popularity and that due to Mr. Garton's leadership, the Bermuda Philharmonic had risen to broader heights.

Sen. Yvette Swan wished to be associated with those remarks and complimented Mr. Garton's direction and leadership.

Sen. Swan also praised Warwick Academy Alumni for their community work.

This included providing music at a dinner hosted by the Bermuda Business and Professional Women's Association last month which honoured members of the Suffragette Movement.

Her UBP colleague Sen. Grant Gibbons, praised Sen. Swan for helping to bring Baroness Blatch to Bermuda. She gave a keynote address to the gathering.

Sen. Gibbons also sent congratulations to Mr. Peter Doyles who replaced Ian Linnegan at the Bermuda Insurance Institute.

Sen. Milton Scott (PLP), wished Mrs. Edith Van Lowe a happy retirement after 38 years as a teacher at the Bermuda Institute.

"She was my teacher in my third and fourth grades and she has taught more than 1000 students in her time. Many who were second and even third generation students. She emulates the best of what teaching is about.'' Sen. Alf Oughton (Ind) sent congratulations to Bermudian cricketer Mr. Noel Gibbons who was chosen to play on the Rest of the World Team against India.

While Sen. Norma Astwood, complimented Ms Allison Swan whose film was recently shown in Bermuda.

"She has considerable talent and I wish her success in that field,'' Sen.

Astwood said.

Sen. Neletha Butterfield (PLP), also sent congratulations to newly crowned Miss Teen Bermuda Jennifer Madeiros and thanked retiring AME pastor Rev.

Wilbur and Mrs. Lowe for their contributions to the community.

Sen. Terry Lister (PLP), praised the committee that restored the Packwood Home, while Sen. Gary Pitman (UBP), complimented the West End Development Corporation for their well organised international foodfest held in Dockyard on May 29.
