South Kent chief to access local talent
Director of Athletics and head soccer coach of South Kent Prep School in Connecticut, Owen Finberg, will be in Bermuda this weekend to evaluate and recruit players for the 2013-14 season.The Bermuda Football Association National Academy, in partnership with the Bermuda School Sports Federation, will host an informational session for students and parents focused on the Prep School and College qualification standards for athletes. Finberg will be the presenter at the weekend session and will evaluate players in the 1997-2000 national academy programme during two matches at the BFA field on Sunday.Tonight at Dellwood Middle School assembly hall at 6.45pm, Finberg will make a presentation on Prep School and College qualification standards. Tomorrow he will watch players at youth league knockout games and attend the First Division match between BAA and Somerset Eagles at BAA Field. On Sunday there will be two National Academy games at the BFA Field starting at 11am and 12.30pm for Finberg to further assess talent.The South Kent Soccer programme has won the New England Championship in five of the last seven seasons. During his time on “the hillside” coach Finberg has won several coaching awards, including being recognised by the Connecticut Soccer Coaches Association, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Adidas for coaching excellence. Coach Finberg holds his Premier Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and an “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).Coach Finberg has coached players from Bermuda for the past 12 years, with his Bermudian alumni going on to win junior college national championships. Several have earned Division I scholarships and Reggie Thompson-Lambe, developed at the school and who led the team to their first championship before heading on to his professional career, is a former player.Current South Kent players include Shakhai Trott (committed to Iona College), Justin Corday (committed to Franklin Pierce College), Trey Durham, still undecided, and freshman Detré Bell.Those who have previously attended South Kent and represented the school on the Prep soccer team Include Vernon Perinchief (University of Hartford), Daniel Johnson (Niagara University), McQuinn Burch (Mercer Junior College), Reggie Thompson-Lambe (Ipswich Town FC, Toronto FC), Khimo Harrison (Belmont-Abbey College), Tahj Bell (Eccleshill United), Anthony Hunter (DePaul University), Jalen Harvey (DePaul University), Shaquille Trott (Thomas College), Tre Ming (Elmira College) and Jesse Seymour.In addition to coaching on the scholastic level, coach Finberg has also worked with the Olympic development programme (ODP) of US Soccer. He has coached internationally at the Gothia Cup, Dana Cup, Lake Como Cup, Rangers Football Club Invitational, Watford and London International Festival of Football, and the Manchester Football Festival. In 2008 he led his under-19 club team to the Connecticut State Cup Championship and won the under-18 Connecticut State Cup Championship in 2010. His USL Super-20 team made the national finals in 2011. He currently coaches club soccer with FC Westchester in the United States Soccer Development Academy.
