Top reinsurance recruiter upbeat on local?s prospects

As Bermuda?s is a major player in the global reinsurance industry graduates may not need to go overseas to obtain international experience to build careers in the insurance industry says bermudaREcruit Executive Recruitment Consultant Colum Lovett.

?It does help to have international experience but I think a lot of graduates are gaining experience by nature of their career paths with these companies,? Mr. Lovett.

?Bermuda is such major player in the industry that the business comes into Bermuda. The Island offers an incredible amount of global capacity within the reinsurance industry.?

?Companies provide the platform for the underwriter to underwrite within that infrastructure. For someone developing their underwriting expertise, the main thing is to join a credible organisation with a healthy rating and to be groomed for greater and bigger things. They will certainly get global exposure from writing business in Bermuda?

Mr. Lovett joined bermudaREcruit ? also trading as The James Partnership ? in February to take over the day to day management of the company, while Britt Reiss, president of bermudaREcruit will continue to be involved in the strategic development of the business. With over 20 years? experience working in the international insurance arena, he gained valuable experience working in the Lloyd?s insurance market.

?Actuarial, catastrophe modelling and risk management skills are key areas where there is a high demand but there will always be a demand for strategic positions from top to bottom. ?Coming from the London market, I have been extremely impressed to identify local Bermudian talent. It is very noticeable with organisations like BFIS (Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies) supporting scholarships and internships and promoting local graduates and advising them on which direction to move, obviously the key areas for growth are in the specialist areas.

?What I am trying to achieve is to build on the reputation of the James Partnership and develop the new brand bermudaREcruit which is the only specialist recruitment, search and selection option with regards to the insurance and reinsurance industry.

?Obviously having a technical background in the industry allows me to understand in great depth clients needs and identify those skills and the candidates we meet and interview.

?Bermuda is such an integral part of the global reinsurance industry and the industry is continuing to grow as we saw last year with start ups with almost $10 billion dollars of new assets coming on to the Island in addition to all the reinsurer?s set up in the last five years.?

Mr. Lovett made the transition into recruitment and executive search and selection almost ten years ago and specialises in recruiting professionals for the insurance, reinsurance and financial services industries.

At bermudaREcruit and The James Partnership, Mr. Lovett will be responsible for recruiting professionals for the reinsurance, investment and hedge fund industries in addition to local industry.

He has already successfully appointed a CEO, a legal Counsel, corporate secretaries, financial controllers, underwriters and actuaries. Mr. Lovett has placed first rate Bermudian candidates in these high level roles and has used bermudaREcruit?s global search facilities to source from off the island to seek out Bermudian talent overseas.

He plans to use his knowledge of recruiting to offer guidance and advice to clients and candidates concerning salaries, staff development, staff retention, internal structure and career progression.
