Man hit by identity theft warns residents about dangers
A 50-year-old Devonshire resident has fallen victim to a gang of Internet pornographers ? for the second time in three months.
The man, who had up to date security software on his personal computer, had his identity stolen by a gang called Geeks Kick Ass who then accessed his Internet service provider (ISP) and downloaded child pornography onto his hard disk.
The victim subsequently spent more than 13 hours on the phone to North Rock?s customer service help line only to be told they could not help him.
?This is ridiculous. My computer is totally useless. North Rock, who claim to be the best on the Island, can?t even trace these vile perverts,? he said. Had he not noticed their actions in time, he could have faced the threat of being put on the sex offenders? register, a hefty fine and imprisonment.
The criminals, who took complete control of the computer, used it also to access personal bank details that he used for Internet banking. There was no no evidence to suggest his bank had been accessed.
Tony Mason, a leading overseas computer consultant for Intellect Systems UK, said: ?While banks do all they can to prevent breeches in their security, the Internet is an open environment which allows communication between computer all over the world. Unfortunately this creates opportunities for fraudsters and other career criminals.?
Many gambling, narcotics and other illegal websites were also accessed via his computer.
Police sources said the Internet gang are likely to evade prosecution because the law does not provide for prosecution of identity thieves.
With 2004 being a banner year for Internet crime, the victim said: ?In a country where we are relying more on the Internet to carry out business, personal business in particular, I feel the public should be made aware of the very real risks and lack of protection they face when using it.?
Evan Howe, spokesman for North Rock Communications, said: ?It is up to the consumer how much security they pay for. The situation is currently being looked into and I am deeply sorry for any inconvenience caused.?
