A final showcase for Just Pastels
An annual art show is likely taking its final bow this weekend.Veteran artist Sharon Wilson has exhibited work by her and students in her art group Just Pastels, for 11 years.Their final showcase, also entitled Just Pastels, opens Sunday at the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard.“My personal goal as an art teacher is to find students who are serious about learning,” said Ms Wilson. “The Just Pastels [art class] has been together for 11 years, but this is likely to be the last year that you will see us exhibit together under this name. We are not going away, but rather we will be seeking to refine and define who we are, which means that you will likely see us popping up in different spots with our newly refined brand.“Life is about growth and change, and I am committed to bringing to the Bermuda public, art to uplift the human spirit and to celebrate the best of Bermuda and her people. I want to thank the people of Bermuda for their support, and for their encouragement.”Ms Wilson and seven of her students will show their work in the upcoming exhibit. Some have been involved in her class for nearly a decade; Mary-Ellen Smiley joined a little over a year ago.“Mary Ellen Smiley and Meredith Johnson often comment that since starting art classes, they now really notice lights and shadows and how differently they observe the physical world, and that they are more aware of colour,” said Ms Wilson. “The newer students have found learning how to adequately use a camera, an unexpected challenge, because each person must first photograph that which they intend to paint.”One student of seven years, Monica Jones, is particularly excited about finding effective ways to reach her audience, Ms Wilson said. Her enthusiasm has taken her to the point of developing her own newsletter, website and blog. She currently has work exhibited at the Masterworks Museum as part of the Charman Prize and has submitted work to the Bermuda National Gallery’s Biennial show on several occasions.“She seeks an audience that is serious about positive social change as she creates art in order to inspire peace, reconciliation and transformation,” said Ms Wilson.Vanessa Turner, Sharon Nannini, Chikako Hoshina and Frank Dublin will also showcase their work.Sunday’s opening is from 5.30pm to 7.30pm; the show runs until November 30.
