Play to aid hurricane victims

members will be performing the play "Old Story Time'' by renowned Jamaican playwright Trevor D. Rhone.

The association is hoping to raise funds for the Caribbean Hurricane Relief Fund which aids islands devastated by the onslaught of hurricanes this year.

Billed as a "humorous and highly entertaining cultural event for all the family, with a very relevant message'', the play focuses on social and family relationships in a small Caribbean village, with the central character "Pa Ben'' narrating the story as it happens.

The association promises that the play will be full of laughs and those who remember and enjoyed the last production, "Beef, No Chicken'', put on by the association "will be thoroughly entertained.'' Playwright Mr. Rhone, is also known for his play "Smile Orange''.

Veteran performer and musician Mr. Ron Lightbourne will lead the cast, which also includes Mr. Wilhelm (Willy) Bourne, Mrs. Gina Davis, Mr. Huron Vidal, Ms Pamela Blackwood and Mrs. Sheila Vidal.

Well-known actress and director Mrs.

Shirley Christopher and Mr. Errol Williams are co-directors for the production.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. show, which will be on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, can be purchased for $20 for patrons and $30 for the public at the City Hall Box office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

*** As the Christmas season approaches, Agape House is embarking on a public awareness fundraising campaign which will bring one big Christmas tree to life.

The fundraiser, which is called Light Up a Life, is being headed by Friends of Hospice comprised of staff, volunteers, family members and community supporters of Agape House.

Each donation received for Light Up a Life will add a light to the fundraising Christmas tree which will be situated outside City Hall.

Agape House volunteer Mrs. Ann Loftus said Light Up a Life was hoping to raise more than $23,000 which would go towards new adjustable beds, bedspreads and new curtains, air filtration systems, whirlpool baths in rooms for patients who are unable to move around, two computers, a washer and dryer, garden furniture, bookcases etc.

"We have sent out 2,395 cards inviting anyone to make a donation and send it back in a no postage required envelope,'' Mrs. Loftus said.

She added that so far Gorham's Ltd. has donated lights and ACE Insurance Company Ltd. has donated $2,500 to help with expenses and "get the ball rolling.

"On November 24 at 6.30 p.m. the lights that have been placed on the tree will be turned on by the Mayor of Hamilton Mr. William Boyle which will also kick off late night Christmas shopping,'' Mrs. Loftus said.

*** Saltus Grammar School has raised more than $84,000 through last month's Hallowe'en fair and raffle which will be used to purchase equipment and learning materials.

Saltus Association president Mr. Charlie Marshall said: "We are delighted both by the turn-out for the fair and by the huge number of raffle tickets sold.

"As a result, we beat last year's total by over $21,000, and increase over one-third.

"An imaginative student venture at the fair was also a big success,'' he added. "Over $800 was earned by Saltus Senior School students who staged a trampoline Jump-A-Thon to support the Committee of 25.

"Boys and girls from the school's Leo Club jumped for over 24 continuous hours to aid the charity. The money will be presented by the students later this month.'' Raffle tickets were sold by students and staff in each of the school's three departments. The Preparatory School topped the ticket sales competition with a total of $22,833, followed by the Senior School with $22,085 and the Junior School with $21,151.
