Their salaries were made public along with the salaries of 30 others employed at the facility in Parliamentary Answers yesterday. In total the Board of Trustees of the Government-owned golf course pay $2.68 million in salaries at Port Royal.

As four of the 12 groundsmen at the 6,842 yard long course the Uighurs are each paid $51,600 a year.

The Uighurs arrived in Bermuda last year amid a storm of controversy when Premier Ewart Brown agreed to relocate them from the infamous Guantánamo Bay detention centre after negotiating directly with the US without Britain's knowledge. They were given jobs at the golf course soon after their arrival.

The Parliamentary Answers also revealed two consultants for the course [EmDash] Steve Johnson and Andrew Brooks earned $199,200 and $182,500 between January 1 2009 and February 28, 2010. Mr. Jackson is the Director of Agronomy while Mr. Brooks is the Director of Golf.

Before joining the team at Port Royal Mr. Johnson was held the same position at the Taghazout South Course near Agadir, Morocco and was the Superintendent of the Green Monkey Course at Sandy Lane Resort.

Mr. Brooks, a PGA professional, golf writer and television commentator, worked at Marriott Tudor Park in Kent before moving to the Island last year.

The list of 30 employees also revealed that mechanics at the golf course earn $62,900 while the General Manager earns $115,100 and Assistant Superintendents earn between $80,000 and $93,000 The other public golf course, Ocean View, hires 12 people and pays $733,000 in salaries a year. Last night Opposition Leader Kim Swan, who submitted the questions, said: "The immediate focus is drawn to the Port Royal Golf Course and the salaries paid out. Notwithstanding, I note the huge compensation packages that have been offered to the Director of Golf and the Director of Agronomy in both cases double that of their subordinate General Manager and Golf Course Superintendents both of whom are Bermudians and nearly triple that of the Head Golf Professional.

"For a public golf facility with a mandate to provide both a quality and an affordable golf experience [EmDash] to pay $987,384 for the management staff alone, for this period, is a clear indication that the total in salaries paid out are top heavy and further exaggerated by the overly generous compensation packages enjoyed by the two Directors.

"What stands out in contrast is the salaries paid out for the seven mostly Bermudian management staff is $572,721 and the compensation for the two Directors total $414,663."
