Police Sgt. Rex Osborne, prosecuting, said Paul Vandyke was stopped by Police officers at the junction of Berry Hill and Point Finger Road because he was driving in an unsteady fashion with no headlight.

But when the officers asked his name, Vandyke replied that it was none of their business. And he almost fell over while trying to put his motor cycle back on its stand.

The defendant, who is a sailor and a self-employed sailmaker, refused to take a breathalyser test.

Vandyke told the court that he was sorry: "I didn't mean to disrupt the Island or anything.'' SHOPLIFTER TURSN VIOLENT CTS An 18-year-old Southampton man turned violent when confronted over the theft of cigarettes from a grocery store.

Neko Cann of Horseshoe Road pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court this week to assaulting the store manager and causing $450 damage to the store's property as well as stealing the cigarettes worth $34.

Cann was spotted by staff at the Heron Bay Market Place on June 1 taking a carton of cigarettes into the store's bathroom where he removed four packets and put them in his clothing. He then went to buy a drink and on leaving the store was confronted by staff.

In the office of the store manager, Mr. Ian Chalmers, Cann became violent, said Police prosecutor Sgt. Rex Osborne. He grabbed Mr. Chalmers, then broke a door, coffee pot and two calculators before running away. He was caught outside by staff members.

Cann, who was on probation at the time of the incident for previous theft offences, was remanded in custody at the Co-Ed Facility by Senior Magistrate the Hon. William Francis. Mr. Francis ordered an update of Cann's social inquiry report before passing sentence.

BEER PUT MAN OVER THE LIMIT CTS A Warwick resident admitted to having had two or three beers when he was stopped by Police on May 25 between Crow Lane and Trimingham Hill.

Robert Rehrl, 26, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court on Wednesday to the charge of driving a motorcycle while impaired.

Sgt. Rex Osborne, prosecuting, told the court that officers saw Rehrl driving unsteadily and could smell alcohol on his breath when questioning him. Rehrl agreed to a breathalyser test at Hamilton Police Station and was tested at 146 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Rehrl was fined $400 by Senior Magistrate the Wor. William Francis and banned from driving all vehicles for 12 months.

TEENAGE MOTHER FORGED CHEQUE CTS A 16-year-old mother of one pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court this week to forging a government cheque and using it to buy groceries.

The teenager forged the cheque for $897.26 in April and used it to obtain groceries and cash from Lines Food and Liquor Mart.

The cheque had been sent in the mail to her guardian for her upkeep.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. William Francis granted the defendant bail in the sum of $500 and ordered a social inquiry report as the defendant was on probation at the time of the offence for stealing $210 in cash last March.
