The Governor has become the first to buy a poppy from the Bermuda Legion as the organisation prepared to launch its annual appeal for war veterans on Sunday.

Mr Rankin last week met Donald Jolliffe, 90, a veteran of the Korean War and Suez Crisis, who was accompanied to Government House by Carol Everson, the case worker and secretary of the Bermuda Legion.

The charity has been cleared to start Remembrance Day fundraising for veterans and widows, including a “Covid-compliant” tag day next Wednesday.

Poppies, wreaths and Bermuda Legion clothing will go on sale at the Poppy Shop at Gateway Systems on Queen Street in Hamilton.

Remembrance Day will be held on November 11.

The ceremony at the Cenotaph on the grounds of Cabinet on Front Street will be a closed event because of Covid-19 restrictions.
