statement on Bermuda's economy in the House of Assembly tomorrow.

Dr. Saul will note that both tourism and international business are up over 1993, which in turn showed an improvement over 1992.

"Competitively speaking, if you look at the last three years, right now the economy is showing some health,'' Dr. Saul told The Royal Gazette recently.

"The balance of payments look very good.'' And Government revenues, which the last Budget forecasted would increase by 6.8 percent to $385 million, "are still on target''.

Total visitor arrivals, while "not over the moon'', were up by about 4.5 percent for the year, Dr. Saul said. And both visitor spending and length of stay were up slightly.

"Retail sales are improving slightly, at least out of the recession and the doldrums,'' Dr. Saul said.

The over-all economic scene, while not "robust'', is "satisfactory''. "As we look forward on this, excepting for the Base problems, we'd have been in very good shape. I'm not at all alarmed.'' On the down side, the statement is expected to note that many Bermuda businesses are still hurting.

Dr. Saul periodically makes economic statements in the House. He last made one in June.
