Saltus unbeaten on tour of Toronto

Saltus Grammar School's first XI football team remain unbeaten on their annual tour in Toronto, winning 3-0 and drawing 1-1 on their first day and following up with a 3-2 victory and a crushing 10-0 win.

Their opening game last Friday was against Durham area powerhouse Holy Trinity of Courtice and a tough, physical game saw the Pembroke school gain an early lead with an opportunist goal from Jake Fox.

Bryan Rose then added to the lead with a well-placed finish.

Saltus leapt into a 3-0 half-time lead as Dante Leverock converted a penalty after he had been brought down in the area.

The second half was hard-fought, but Saltus defended well to finish as deserved winners.

After lunch, a drive back to Toronto saw them playing on the artifical surface of Upper Canada College. Tired legs meant that the same level of intensity as the morning game wasn't possible, but against well-organised opponents Saltus held out well to earn the draw.

Tough defending by Milton Stephens and Alton Roberts, good goalkeeping from Jamin Furbert, and poor finishing from UCC kept Saltus in the game.

With 10 minutes remaining, Teryn Fray got above his marker to strongly head home a Dante Leverock header. But in the dying moments, former Saltus student and Bermuda resident Killian Elkinson worked his way through the Saltus defence to earn a draw for the Toronto school.

Playing their third game in 24 hours, the Bermuda school struggled in the early stages to get to grips with their more physical Canadian opponents of Appleby College. They found themselves a goal down mid-way through the first half when Appleby scored from a free kick while Saltus were still arranging their defensive wall.

The score remained in the Canadians' favour until mid-way through the second-half when Rakeem DeShields chased down a long ball and nipped between two defenders to score the equaliser from an acute angle. However, the comeback was short-lived as Appleby stormed back to regain the lead with 10 minutes to go.

Saltus didn't give up and a poor clearance from Appleby saw DeShields slide a ball through the defence for Bryan Rose to tie things up. Saltus now scented victory and in the last minute, Daniel Andrade hit a shot from the edge of the area and Leverock reacted quickest to hit the winner.

The team also met one of Bermuda's former greats, Eversley Lewis (formerly of Aberdeen), who lives in the area and had come along to watch the team.

That afternoon Saltus went on to play Ridley College who fielded a second team and Saltus took the opportunity to get a little respite for tired legs as they easily ran the game to run out 10-0 winners. Goalscorers were: Jake Fox (4), Lawrence Doughty (2), Rakeem DeShields, Jamin Furbert and Daniel Andrade.

They round their tour out with a game against Oakville FC, who are the largest youth football club in Ontario, and are directed by former Bermuda resident, Brett Mosen.
