Spirited pot make wanderers sweat

Martin Lane with a broken leg to almost pull off a shocking upset victory over Commercial Division Group A leaders BAA Wanderers on Saturday.

Pot, winless since November 21, took the lead through Mike Evans while Lane was still on the sidelines waiting for an ambulance to take him to hospital.

They stayed in front until five minutes from the end when BAA snatched a last-gasp equaliser through Ricky Correia.

Lane's injury gave Lobster Pot's 41-year-old player/coach Roger Firmen -- their only substitute at the time -- the chance to play in a Commercial Division game for the 17th consecutive season.

Firmen almost scored a rare goal but had a shot cleared off the line. He managed 40 minutes of play before being replaced himself at half-time by late-arriving substitute Rich Drennan.

Meanwhile, taking advantage of this slip by the front-runners as well as one by Robin Hood, who dropped a point against Spinning Wheel, were Forties as they moved into second place with a 4-0 thrashing of Fire Services.

Brian Fubler, Leon Bascome, Roy Fellows and Derek Patience all got on the scoresheet, enabling Forties to pull to within six points of BAA.

Scoring sensation Des Minors notched his league-leading 15th goal in the match between Robin Hood and Spinning Wheel, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Minors scored with time running out on his side after they had trailed for much of the match to a first-half strike by Hood's Mike Evans.

The once high-riding Island Rangers slumped to their fifth defeat in six games when they were demolished 5-2 by KPMG Peat Marwick.

Such was the ineptitude of Rangers that KPMG goalkeeper Steve Retter was allowed to get in the scoring column, netting from a goal-kick that was badly misjudged by the 'keeper.

Surprisingly, Rangers led 2-0 at one point but could not hold off a resurgent KPMG outfit. Others tallying for the victors were Neil Clemens (two) Gary Knight and Rob Newman.

Mike Corday and Mike Bremar scored for Rangers.

Close games were the order of the day in Group B as all three matches were decided by a single goal.

The most exciting affair saw Somerset Extros edge their St. George's counterparts 3-2 on goals by Arthur Tucker, Radell Tankard and Roger Hunt.

Cal Raynor and Charles Wade netted for the east-enders.

At Malabar, Prison Officers, in their first match since the untimely death of goalkeeper Derwin Adams, saw off the challenge of Coca-Cola with goals on either side of the interval by Gary Smith and Vince Minors.

Dexter Smith managed a consolation strike for the losers 10 minutes before time expired.

Antoine Cannonier was the hero in Exiles' 1-0 defeat of Devonshire Colts All-Stars.

Second-placed Dandy Town handed Somerset a 7-1 hiding when the pair hooked up in an Alliance Division Group A match at St. John's field.

Carlos Smith ran rampant on his opponents, notching a hat-trick while Michael Wells aided with two and Gladwin Johnson and Cleveland Rogers one apiece.

George Cann found the net for Somerset.

North Village were similarly in a belligerent mood and this was felt by Boulevard who went down to a 4-0 defeat.

Abdul Smith (two), Dwayne Adams and Richard Wilson were the marksmen.

In Group B, St. George's were the ones handing out a beating, this time to Devonshire Cougars by the count of 5-1. Two goals apiece by Del Tyrell and Andre Todd along with one by Troy Hall spurred St. George's. Cory Smith replied for Cougars.

In other matches, Hamilton Parish nipped BAA 3-2 and Devonshire Colts downed Southampton by a similar score. As Port Royal have now dropped out of the league, St. David's had a bye.

Goals by Chris Caisey, Albert Wolffe and Irving Burgess helped Parish to their seventh win, with Gary Flood and Robert Pacheco replying for BAA.

For Colts, Kenny Dill struck twice and Theron Smith once to counteract two from Rangers' Gary Williams.
