Bermuda change up for Pakistan

tackle world one-day champions Pakistan next weekend and there was no place for opening batsman Dennis Archer and fast bowler Kenny Phillips.

Archer had struggled for runs during Bermuda's training camp in Barbados in March and that continued in two matches against Derbyshire, at a time when injury robbed the team of two of its established players.

Former captain Wendell Smith is expected to be out of action until July with a bad knee while Ricky Hill, Bermuda's most experienced opener, has just returned following a broken finger, but will be off the Island.

The board has now turned to Willow Cuts captain Dexter Basden, who opened his season with 90 against Southampton, and Dexter Smith, who made scores of 71 and 26 not out against Derbyshire for the St. George's Cup Match XI and Western Stars. Retained is Devonshire Rec. wicket-keeper/batsman Roger Trott, the third specialist opener in the squad, but he is not expected to play the first match on Saturday, May 8, for religious reasons.

Phillips remains out of favour after playing only one match in Barbados, although he gave the selectors a nudge with a spirited showing in St. George's big win over Devonshire Rec. last weekend.

However, Somerset captain Perry Maybury has been included to join a front-line bowling attack that will be spearheaded by Terry Burgess and Anthony Edwards with young Diallo Sharrieff stepping up from the under-25 squad to senior recognition.

The other player included is Stevie Lightbourne whose competitive fire has been rekindled after a fine season after Southampton Rangers in 1992 and a good start this year.

Bermuda face Pakistan at St. David's on May 8 and at Somerset Cricket Club on May 9. Both matches are limited to 50 overs and start at 11 a.m.

Squad: Albert Steede (captain), Clevie Wade (vice-captain), Arnold Manders, Noel Gibbons, Stevie Lightbourne, Jeff Richardson, Dexter Basden, Dexter Smith, Roger Trott, Glenn Smith, Allan Douglas, Perry Maybury, Terry Burgess, Anthony Edwards, Diallo Sharrieff.

This group will train next Tuesday and Thursday at Southampton Oval (5.30 p.m.) and on Wednesday at Devonshire Rec. (5.30 p.m.). All players are to report in full gear to coach Doug Ferguson. Those unavailable should contact the BCBC by tomorrow on 292-8958.

The following is Saturday's Reserve Division schedule: Bailey's Bay v Hamilton Parish, St. David's v St. George's, Police v Devonshire Rec., PHC v Southampton Rangers, Flatts v Cleveland.
