Cougars strike early to dislodge Rangers

Southampton Rangers lost their hold of first place when they were unable to recover after conceding two early goals against Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Rec. field.

Devon Brangman stunned the visitors early when he took advantage of a lapse by goalkeeper Lynn Tucker and put the ball home from close range. Tucker hesitated to clear a pass made back by a defender and the nippy Brangman raced in to block him with the ball rolling helplessly into goal.

Before Southampton could recover from the setback, Dale Russell made it 2-0, driving the ball home from just outside the box after taking a short free kick from Dwayne Bean two minutes later.

However, Southampton found the goal after 17 minutes to reduce the arrears to one when Donald Hall scored after the ball was helped into goal by the Cougars goalkeeper Fred Richardson.

The second half belonged to Southampton but they just did not have the finishing power to grab a point.

Cougars were pinned down for long spells but with centre-backs Brenton Peterson and Cory Smith marshalling the defence Southampton were left frustrated most of the time.

Corey Simmons did try a few long-range shots that Richardson had covered, but most of the time some good approach work by Southampton was wasted when substitute Ricky Nisbett on the right wing failed to produce.

Vasco 3, Port Royal 0 Vasco regained the leadership in the Second Division yesterday at St. John's field -- but the win came at a price as they had two players sent off.

It was not until after they had Colin Lloyd sent off for swearing after taking a knock from Mark DeMoura that Vasco broke the deadlock.

Lloyd had been booked minutes earlier for ungentlemanly conduct as he followed team-mates Paul Towlson (dissent) and Donovan Livingston (ungentlemanly conduct) into referee Chris Jones' book.

The opening goal came in the 27th minute when Ricky Mallory was put through the Port Royal defence and kept his cool to beat Russell Smith from close range.

Port Royal, who went close with a DeMoura free kick in the 29th minute, fell further behind in the 38th minute when a long ball into their box by Earl Richardson saw Ricky Brangman fail with his headed clearance and Anthony Bailey pounce to score the first of his two goals.

Tempers started to flare a bit after that as Port Royal player/coach Leroy Wilson was booked for a foul on Richardson, and five minutes into the second half Wilson's son Nakia Smith had his name taken when Richardson was fouled again.

From the resulting free kick on the left side Vasco went through to score their third goal when Bailey volleyed past Smith with his right foot to put the match out of Port Royal's reach.

Derek Thomas almost made it four a minute later when his low shot beat the diving Smith but hit the far post.

Port Royal remained determined and enjoyed a period of pressure but could not find the net. Brian Brangman became their third booking when he had his name taken for failing to move back 10 yards from a Vasco free kick in the 80th minute.

Port Royal should have reduced the deficit five minutes from the end when they were awarded a penalty after DeMoura kicked the ball against the hand of Donovan Livingston. The protesting Towlson was shown the red card and DeMoura stepped up to put his spot kick high over the bar.

BAA 1, Wolves 4 Two goals in the last five minutes made this scoreline look more impressive from Wolves' standpoint as hosts BAA conceded their 10th goal in three home matches since their field re-opened.

The Greens opened the scoring in the third minute through Gary Flood before Gary Burgess equalised for Wolves in the 20th minute.

It stayed that way until the 62nd minute when top scorer Marlon Lindsay notched his 13th goal of the season.

Then, after Lindsay volleyed just over the bar from 10 yards, Mandy Thomas put an effort wide and Albert Thomas smashed a shot against the post with 'keeper Keith Hodgkins beat, Wolves closed out the scoring with goals in the 85th and 89th minutes.

Shannon Berkeley hit the third with a shot from on the left side, which went through the arms of the diving 'keeper and into the far corner. DeShields completed the scoring a minute from the end when he beat the 'keeper from close range from a goalmouth scramble.

Prospect 1, Somerset Eagles 2 Somerset Eagles picked up two valuable points at Police field as all three goals came in the first half.

Jerome Richardson opened the scoring for Eagles in the seventh minute before Robert Goodchild replied for Prospect in the 19th. Terrence Christopher notched what turned out to be the winner four minutes before the end of the first half.

Prospect's Trent Lightbourne was sent off late in the second half by Keith Smith for throwing punches in an off-the-ball incident that was spotted by a linesman.

Paget 3, Social Club 1 Shawn Stovell netted twice and Horace Brown got the other goal as Paget handed Social Club this two-goal defeat in the opener at Devonshire Rec. field. Troy Darrell got a consolation goal for Social Club at the end.

Stovell's two goals gave Paget a deserved lead at the half and even when Brown made it 3-0 early in the second half Social Club remained very competitive.

With Darrell leading the attack, Social Club pressed hard and forced Paget to defend for majority of the half. But time and again it was left for Paget goalkeeper Raymond Young to deny them success as he pulled off some great saves.
