`Stompy' welcomed at conference

Local Crime Stopper chairman McNeil Warner attended the conference in Mobile, Alabama earlier this month along with some 300 representatives from the US, Canada, Europe, Africa, Australia, the Far East, and the West Indies.

Mr. Warner said Bermuda's Crime Stoppers mascot "Stompy'', which was on display at the conference, was also mentioned at the conference.

And Mr. Warner told the conference that the mascot was a feature associated with the celebration of Crime Stoppers' first anniversary in Bermuda which is to be observed from October 28 to November 3.

In addition to business, workshops at the conference focussed on organising school Crime Stoppers, computer crime, crime against the elderly, terrorism in the UK and the Internet.

BERMUDIANS ELIGIBLE FOR '97 GRANTS AWD Bermudians eligible for '97 grants Bermudians can apply for the University of Warwick's 1997 Caribbean Scholarship, the British High Commission announced this week.

The biennial award, which is worth 6,000, is open to undergraduate and post graduate students of Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, The Grenadines, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitt's and Nevis, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Of the 13,500 students at the university, 2,000 are international students from 114 countries.

The closing date for applications for the 1997 Caribbean Scholarship is May 30, 1997.

Applications may be collected from Information Services in Global House on Church Street.

BEAT UP GIRLFRIEND, REPORT ORDERED CTS Beat up girlfriend, report ordered A Magistrate yesterday ordered a social inquiry report for a man who slapped his girlfriend three times, broke a screen door and used offensive words.

Clyde Saltus 21, of Happy Valley Road, Pembroke, admitted the offences that occurred on October 20.

Sgt. Phil Taylor said Saltus went to Denice Palmer's home with the intention of picking up his three-week-old son for a visit with his family.

Since no prior arrangement was made, Palmer declined to let the child go with him. Saltus became agitated and slapped Palmer who was breast-feeding the infant at the time.

The blow caused her head to strike a nearby wall and he proceeded to kick a screen door.

Saltus said he only wanted to see his son.

Magistrate Cheryl Ann Mapp ordered a social inquiry report for Saltus who was released on $1,000 bail with a like surety and ordered him back in court for sentencing on December 5.

SOCIAL REPORT FOR TEEN POT-SMOKER CTS Social report for teen pot-smoker A social inquiry report was yesterday ordered for a St. George's teenager after he admitted possessing .20 grams of cannabis.

Jeremy Smith, 18, of Coot Pond Road, St. George's pleaded guilty to the offence that occurred on May 16 in Pembroke.

Sgt. Phil Taylor prosecuting said Smith was seen near the bathrooms in Victoria Park smoking a hand rolled cigarette.

He was also seen placing a package in his back pocket. A search revealed a pack of Marlboro cigarettes and two hand rolled cigarettes that he told Police were "weed''.

Smith, a student at Bermuda Institute, told Police he had been given the package by another man and intended to take it home to check it.

Magistrate Cheryl Ann Mapp ordered a social inquiry report for Smith who was released on $1,000 bail with one surety. He will appear again on December 3 for sentencing.

POLICE INVESTIGATING HIT-AND-RUN CRM Police investigating hit-and-run Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident which left two visitors with cuts and abrasions.

The visitors were travelling east on South Road -- just west of Church Road in Southampton -- at about 3.30 p.m. on Sunday when the accident occurred.

They told Police they were indicating their intention to turn onto Church Bay when a motorcycle rider began to overtake and collided with their cycle.

The rider failed to stop.

MAN THREATENED GUESTS WITH KNIFE CRM Man threatened guests with knife A 23-year-old Smith's Parish man, who entered an East End guest property and threatened staff and visitors with a knife, is expected to appear in Magistrates' Court shortly.

Police said the man made his way into the kitchen of the property, just before 5.30 p.m. on Sunday, and threatened security and kitchen staff with a knife.

He refused to comply with requests to leave and began shouting obscenities and threatening the hotel guests.

Police spokesperson Evelyn James-Barnett said Police were called in and the man was eventually arrested and taken to St. George's Police Station where he was searched and detained.

BELCO PUTS UP LIGHTS ON CEMETERY ROAD BUC Belco puts up lights on Cemetery Rd.

Bermuda Electric Company Ltd. has installed cautionary traffic lights near a "dangerous'' curve along Cemetery Road in Pembroke.

The company, in a brief statement issued last week, said the lights were set up as a safety measure for Belco's plant personnel.

"The lights, when flashing, will serve as a warning for motorists to slow down, allowing safer road access for both pedestrians and working vehicles,'' it explained.

WEATHERMAN TAKEN OFF THE ROAD CTS Weatherman taken off the road A 33-year-old Serco weather observer was fined $450 and taken off the road yesterday for 12 months after he admitted driving with more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

Ralph Millett of Farm Lane, Hamilton Parish, pleaded guilty to the offence that occurred on October 11.

Sgt. Phil Taylor said Police saw Millett riding a motorcycle around 2.40 a.m.

and followed him after he descended Flatt's Hill and failed to stop at the junction with North Shore Road.

They noticed that he was swerving from side to side and at one point he barely missed a car that was travelling south on the other side of the road.

Police stopped Millett and found him to be unsteady with a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.

A breath test revealed he had 184 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80.

SNATCHED BAG WHILE VICTIM IN STALL CRM Snatched bag while victim in stall A teenager snatched the handbag of an 81-year-old female visitor as she used a public restroom.

Police spokesman P.c. Gary Venning said the woman, from New York, told Police she visited the restroom around 11.40 a.m. on Monday and placed her handbag on the floor.

"A young teenager entered the restroom and snatched the bag from under the cubicle before fleeing the premises on a small child's pedal cycle,'' P.c.

Venning noted.

The brown leather handbag contained an undisclosed quantity of cash, the woman's passport, airline tickets, credit cards, and other personal items.
