Swallows flying high as league action resumes
Play resumed in both the women’s and men’s hockey leagues last weekend after a four-week break for the holiday season.
Fresco’s Swallows tightened their lock at the top of the A division with a 4-1 victory over second-placed Ravens on Sunday.
Liz Hartley opened the scoring for Swallows late in the first half with a successful short corner routine.
And shortly after half-time Joann Wilson added the first of her two goals in open play.
Team-mate Jenny Chattock took Swallows’ lead to 3-0 just three minutes later.
Wilson nabbed her second goal from a short corner in the 51st minute, giving Swallows a two for six conversion rate for the day.
Ravens did manage to secure a late goal in open play to avoid a shut-out, courtesy of Megan Troake.
In the other ‘A’ match of the weekend, Canaries beat Swifts 5-0.
Captain Mary-Ellen Jackson led her team’s scoring drive with a hat-trick while Lisa DeSilva and Sheona Griffiths contributed a goal apiece.
Swifts reversed the result in the ‘B’ division match-up of these two squads, however, with a 4-1 win over Canaries.
Ashley Fox grabbed Swifts’ first goal in the first two minutes of play and Yvonna Osborne followed up with another. Both goals were in open play as Swifts went nought for five on short corners.
Canaries’ R. Bedford snatched a goal back before half-time to take the scoreline to 2-1.
But it was all Swifts in the second half with Keishae Robinson and Erica Parsons each adding a goal to the winning effort.
Swifts ‘B’ squad picked up an additional three points with a 1-0 win over Bluebirds on Sunday. Parsons scored the lone goal in this match.
In other ‘B’ play, Cardinals suffered a 5-0 drubbing from Wildcats.
Carmen Adebiyi contributed two goals while team-mates Brittni DeSilva, Val Holder and Alecia Holder added one each.
Ravens and Swallows’ ‘B’ squads stalled in a 0-0 draw on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, Panthers hit three late goals in the second half of play to take down Chameleons 3-1.
This match was scoreless until the 50th minute when Mark Finnigan put Chameleons on the board first with an open-play goal.
Panthers’ Dave Horan, Matt Spencer and Stephen Troake then all found the net to deny Chameleons.
In other men’s action, Rebels battled back from a 2-0 deficit against Upstarts to secure a 2-2 draw.
Phil Trussel and Gary Tavares were the goalscorers for Upstarts while Dave Gutteridge and Bert Rodney slotted one apiece for Rebels.
