Jury shown seized firearms in smuggling case
A Supreme Court jury was shown two firearms seized as part of an investigation into a plot to import guns, drugs and ammunition into Bermuda.
Pc Brian McNab, a firearms expert and armourer for the Bermuda Police Service, said that he received five vacuum-sealed packages in December 2023.
Inside the packages, he said he identified a Taurus handgun, a Smith and Wesson handgun with an attached laser sight, several magazines and a combined total of 131 rounds of ammunition.
Mr McNab said the firearms were fully functional and appeared to be brand new, while the ammunition was tested and found to be live.
The officer was shown several video clips, which the jury earlier heard were found on a phone belonging to Ezekiel Swan.
Mr McNab said the firearm seen in the video matched the description of the Smith and Wesson firearm that had been seized, noting the laser sight, the trigger guard and markings on the weapon’s grip among other similarities.
Jonathan McAlpine-Talbot and Mr Swan have denied allegations that they conspired with others to import and supply firearms and ammunition between an unknown date and November 14, 2023.
Both men have also denied allegations of conspiring to import and supply controlled drugs between an unknown date and December 2, 2023.
Mr McAlpine-Talbot also denied a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice by improperly sharing information into the investigation of the murder of Wilfred Outerbridge Jr.
Ryan Resendes, Jonathan Mello and Jose Puga have pleaded guilty to offences linked to the alleged plot.
Earlier in the trial, the jury saw CCTV footage showing Mello and Resendes travelling between St George’s, St David’s and a public dock, while GPS records from Mr McAlpine-Talbot’s police radio showed him travelling to the same public dock at the same time in the early hours of November 14, 2023.
Less than an hour later, recordings from a St George’s garage, owned by Resendes’s family, showed Mello bringing a black bucket into the garage and removing alleged firearms in heat-sealed packages from the bucket.
The court heard that police executed a search at the garage on December 2, 2023, and discovered a black bucket containing several items in heat-sealed packages, including firearms, near the tree line of the property.
The jury were also shown video clips found on Mr Swan’s phone, recorded in October 2023, which appeared to show a variety of cannabis products and a firearm with a laser sight.
A police witness said they recognised the voices of both Puga and Mr Swan in some of the videos.
The trial continues.
