Community shocked by murder
As news of the murder of well-known fisherman Vaughn Fubler continued to spread throughout the community yesterday, so too did tributes for the slain grandfather, father, co-worker and dedicated citizen described by many as "a fun-loving and easy-going guy".
"Vaughn was a quiet, "Vaughn was a quiet, kind, loving, considerate and very likeable individual," recalled Charles Farmer, a close associate of the deceased. "Everybody is just stunned.
"Vaughn believed in service work and he was a very committed and great guy."
Like many, Mr. Fubler's cousin Oliver Caisey was left searching for answers when news of the tragic events in the Caribbean reached local shores.
"You try to do all the good things in life and then something like this happens. Lots of people in the family are still trying to come to grips with this," Mr.Caisey told The Royal Gazette, as he struggled to piece together the words. "My first reaction when I heard of the death was one of shock. I said to myself 'not Vaughn' because he was such a nice guy."
Mr. Fubler was a well-liked and respected employee at the Shell Gas Station on St.John's Road, Pembroke who loved to spend many hours deep sea fishing in his boat.
"Whenever you saw Vaughn he would always talk about fishing," Mr. Caisey recalled.
Mr. Fubler was also an avid chef who loved to cook for others and he could often be seen backing his beloved Dandy Town at football venues around the Island before he decided to devote more time to the construction of his home in Jamaica and complete repair work to his fishing boat.
"Vaughn was the type of person that would always go beyond the call of duty if he knew he could assist you. And many people who made regular contact with him when he worked at the gas station would attest to that," Mr. Caisey said.
"Vaughn was a community man who was very friendly and would do anything to help you. He was never a troublesome person or caused anybody any harm or anything like that.
"It's just really unfortunate something like this had to happen because he was just a really easy-going guy."
