Rowers bring back bronze
The Bermuda Rowing Association's junior crew have arrived back in Bermuda from their first ever international competition with two bronze medals after Leah Amaral and Stephanie Wright placed third in the novice quad event whilst competing at the 39th Brentwood Regatta in Vancouver.
Amaral and Wright combined with two other scullers from Brentwood, Tamsyn Cullimore and Sara Sicherman, and a Cox Kit Cloutier to win the bronze in the Junior Varsity novice quad event.
The all ladies crew of Amaral, Wright, Danielle Thompson, Brittany and Katrina Hassell along with Coach Giuliana Gonsalves then placed third in their heat to claim the second bronze.
Having arrived on April 19th to train at Brentwood before the regatta, which started on the 24th, Jim Ganley, a coach at Brentwood who has been coming to Bermuda for the past two years to teach beginners classes made sure that the Bermuda crew had everything, they needed to win.
This was the team's first junior overseas competition and coach Gonsalves stated that the ladies had an amazing time with 1,600 other competitors a total of 38 other schools and clubs.
"We are so fortunate to have Jim he helped organize our race and helped me to get in touch with all the right people," said coach Gonsalves.
"The girls had an amazing time and represented Bermuda so well, I am so proud of how far they have come."
Having never competed against other scullers they still held their ground coming in fourth in two other competitions and sixth in the other two.
The Hassell sisters came in fourth against seven other crews in their heat and overall the pair came in seventh out of 19 crews.
