Chattock aims to become a familiar name
A new name on the sporting scene emerged at Mid Ocean Club on Saturday and following the final of the Ladies Amateur Match Play Championship it's one that, in golfing circles at least, should soon become familiar.
In her first appearance in a local tournament, former English county champion Jenny Chattock stamped her authority on the event with an impressive five and three victory over Nikki Boyce.
As was the case in the men's final, neither player produced their best golf.
But Chattock, a resident on the Island for only 10 months, certainly showed glimpses of the form which more than a decade ago saw her lift the ladies amateur crown in her home county of Surrey.
Since then her clubs were gathering dust in a cupboard until her arrival in Bermuda.
"I did play a lot but gave up for 10 years," explained Chattock following Saturday's win.
"But now I'm enjoying every minute of it. I wasn't great today but I always had my nose in front and I think I put the pressure on when it was needed."
Chattock finally closed out the match in style at the 33rd (15th hole), sinking an eight foot putt for birdie.
She had finished the morning round two-up and stretched that lead to five by the 12th hole of the afternoon.
Boyce halved 13 and won the 14th with a bogey to keep the match alive after Chattock drove out of bounds, but was always playing catch-up.
"I was just glad to be out here until the 15th hole," laughed Boyce. "I've got to be pleased because it's the first final I've ever played in.
"Jenny played very well. But I didn't expect to get to the final let alone the 15th hole second time around, so I'm really pleased.
"Today my putting had to be a lot better, I had far too many three-putts. The short game - it's always the killer.
"But no excuses, Jenny deserved to win."
