George's Extraordinary Election.

Ms Caisey was voted in as the new Common Councillor for the Corporation after the election yesterday, following the death of Leon (Jimmy) Williams in the summer.

After a short recount, Returning Officer Robert S. Lewis announced Ms. Caisey as the winner with 68 votes, second placed was Ivan Rudolph Smith, closely followed by Christopher West, William Donald Davis and Kingsley Francis.

A delighted Ms. Caisey, 46, said: " I am so excited. I want to thank all the people who voted for me. I was sorry there was a low turnout.

"I didn't take anything for granted, everybody kept telling me I was going to win but I was hoping.

"I lost last time by 13 votes, and I think I learnt from that this time around.'' After being sworn in, the Bermuda Home assistant manager said she was looking forward to serving on the council.

"I want to work for the good of the town and I will do it to the best of my ability.'' St. George's Mayor Lois Perinchief MBE said she was looking forward to having another woman on the council, adding that she would be keeping her "very busy''.

Voting took place at the Town Hall, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Shortly after 8 p.m., Robert Lewis announced the results.

A total of 163 votes were cast, including two spoiled papers, from the 343 who were eligible to vote -- a turnout of 47.5 percent.

There was a short recount after a discrepancy over two votes.

The results were as follows: Mariea Christine Caisey -68.

Ivan Rudolph Smith - 30.

Christopher George Wendell West - 28.

William Donald Davis - 24.

Kingsley Rowland Francis -11.

Presently the Corporation of St. George's consists of nine members; Mayor Lois Perinchief, Aldermen Noela Haycock, C. Ross Smith, and Terrence Roberts; and Common Councillors E. Michael Jones, David Raine, Louis DeSilva and Kenneth Bascome.

In the last election in November 1997, a new Mayor was elected, Lois Perinchief beating Gladstone Trott.

Four people contested three Aldermen seats, with Delaey Robinson losing out.

And the five Common Councillor seats were fought out between seven people.

Those unsuccessful were William Davis and Maria Caisey -- both of whom fought for the vacant seat this time around.

THE WINNER -- Mariea Caisey won the St. George's Extraordinary Election last night.
