Personal skills in focus at IAAP conference

Communication was the name of the name of the game at the annual educational conference of the Bermuda Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).

The meeting, which was held at the Fairmont Southampton Princess last week, focused on 'How To Become A Better Communicator' and comprised the IAAP team of educational chairperson Tina Basden, CAP, president Tina Wilson, president-elect Yolanda Furbert, vice-president/public relations officer Stephanie Wilkinson, treasurer Karlene Lightbourne, recording secretary Gina Davis, and corresponding secretary Waynette Smith.

Margaret McMullen of Skillpath Seminars presented the conference, talking about how powerful communication skills can propel you along the path to career success and personal achievement, with 35 attendees having the chance to network and take part in group and individual interaction.

The sessions consisted of total communication in terms of use of voice tone and body language, including speech habits and behaviours that destroy a person's credibility such as using profanity, tentative speech, spreading rumours, opinionated speech, keeping confidential information private, the need to develop mouth management skills, gaps in logic - being consistent and reliable in the information presented, and vacillation - being decisive and not fluctuating between points.

Other tips featured cultivating interpersonal skills to interact well with others and deal with difficult situations gracefully, exhibiting self-control, being tolerant and patient, considerate of others, tactful and diplomatic, able to work with people, and possessing social poise, self-assurance and confidence.

Ms Wilson said: "In conclusion our attendees learned a host of communication styles and techniques, better listening skills, personal action and assertive planning for more effective communication."
