Refs to reward ?safest? club
Bermuda Referees Association (BRA) have unveiled a new trophy which is to be presented to the club they believe is the most committed to promoting safety at their ground as well as ensuring a comfortable environment for spectators.
The President?s Cup will be presented to a Bermuda Football Association affiliate on an annual basis with the recipient of this year?s award to be chosen tomorrow during a special awards ceremony at Ocean View Golf Club, beginning at 7.30 p.m.
St.George?s, Ireland Rangers and Devonshire Recreation Club are the three clubs nominated for the inaugural award.
?The new trophy will be presented to the affiliate who demonstrates a commitment to providing safety, security and a comfortable environment for all of football ? not just for the officials but for the spectators as well,? explained BRA president Richard Knight.
?Bermuda Referees Association have always promoted safety and security at football games and if you can recall we did have some meetings with the clubs over the past couple of years and they have made an attempt to put some of these requests and proposals into place.
?We are looking for them to make the commitment to ensure their grounds are comfortable for everybody. So just as an incentive and encouragement to all those involved in football we thought it would be nice to have an award for clubs that really demonstrate a commitment to that cause.?
Raising affiliate?s ?consciousness? over problems facing football today still remains the BRA?s primary objective, said Knight.
?They (problems) are not necessarily anything to do with football but football is a forum for all this confusion that is going on in the community today and sometimes I feel sorry for the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) because they have tried on numerous occasions to get clubs to become more responsible for their grounds,? he added.
?A lot of the times the BFA are blamed for something that has happened that really a club should be blamed for. So this award basically is to get the clubs to work together and help to provide the necessary requirements that are going to make football better in the long run.?
Knight hoped the annual award would eventually attract interest from the business community in the form of sponsorship.
?It?s a beginning and hopefully it will continue to grow,? he said. ?Hopefully we can get sponsors who will contribute and help clubs to meet these requirements ? either financially or physically.?
