Teaching conference attracts teachers from across Caribbean

Bermuda College will welcome more than 100 Caribbean educators next week as it hosts an education conference.

The fifth Annual Caribbean Area Network for Quality Assurance in Tertiary Education (CANQATE) Conference takes place on November 5 and November 6 at the Elbow Beach Hotel. It is sponsored in conjunction with the Ministry of Education.

The theme is 'New Pedagogy for Tertiary Education: A Quality Paradigm'.

It will feature seasoned educators from the United States, Bermuda and the Caribbean examining a variety of topics or conference strands, including 'Learner Empowerment', 'Achieving Competitive Advantage in Education', 'Ethical Issues in Tertiary Education', "The Virtual Learning Community' and others.

The Pre-Conference Workshop at Bermuda College on November 4 will focus on the gender imbalances in tertiary education and will examine the widespread challenge that colleges and universities have in attracting and retaining males in tertiary education.

Workshop presenters include Bermudian, Dr. Llewellyn Simmons, 'The Education Challenge: It's More than Gender Imbalance'; Mr Jason McCracken, 'The Crisis of the African-American Male as it Relates to Education in the Last Ten Years'; and Dr. Barbara Bailey, 'Gender and Higher Education: Issues of Formal and Substantive Equality'. The workshop begins at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 4 p.m.

Bermuda College presenters during the overall conference will include James Agee 'Do You See What I see? Literacy as the Key to Unlocking the E-Library', Dr. Ameenah Ahad and Dr. Sharon Parris, 'Learning with Style: Using Self-Knowledge to Empower Students', and Dr. Lisa Osborne 'Adult Students and Learner-Centered Instruction at the Bermuda College'.
