Kyme lifts veterans title
veterans' title in the Fast Forward Freight Club squash championships on Thursday night.
Competition was fierce with Christine Barnes and Val Protheroe also vying for the title. Barnes eventually placed second, beating Protheroe 10-8, 9-5, 9-10, 10-8.
In the quarter-finals of the men's division one draw, Harry McKenzie brushed past his normal training partner Norman Furtado to set up a semi-final against Tommy Sherratt.
And in the other quarter-final, Anthony White was forced to pull out with 'flu, defaulting to Ryan Bell who now must play Mel Caines in the semi-finals.
The men's division two quarter-finals augured well for Bermuda in the upcoming Junior World Championships as Stephen Smith and Andrew Robinson, who will represent the Island in that tournament in Italy, both advanced.
Robinson won a tight match against second seed Chris Hopkins 9-2, 7-9, 9-7, 6-9, 9-4 while Smith defeated Tim Bridges 9-4, 3-9, 9-4, 9-5.
In the other quarters, Cory Powell beat Tallent Clark, another junior, 9-10, 9-7, 9-0, 5-9, 9-4 and top seed Ken McClure got past David Michael 9-5, 7-9, 9-5, 9-5.
In men's division three, top seed David Andrews won 3-1 over Donato Sgobba to move through to today's final.
The finals today begin at 6.00 p.m. with the ladies' division one title match scheduled for 8.00 followed by the men's divison one clash at 8.40.
