Trojans still top of the pile in Somerset
Somerset Trojans 1 –Somerset Eagles 0
Somerset Trojans won the battle of the bragging rights in a bad tempered match against arch enemies Somerset Eagles in the Friendship Trophy at Bernard Park.
Trojans' win was made even more impressive after they were forced to play the second half without their scorer, Adrian Burrows, who was dismissed for a second bookable offence when he kicked the ball into a fence in front of a group of Eagles supporters while celebrating his goal.
As tempers flared after the final whistle a minor tussle broke out between players from both team with Trojans' Zahkie Iris being issued with a red card by referee Anthony Francis.
On the stroke of half-time Trojans took the lead through a controversial finish by striker Burrows who fired a loose ball home after 'keeper Eunico Trott had collided with an opposing attacker.
It appeared Trott had the ball securely in his hands prior to the challenge which resulted in the young keeper being taken to hospital with a neck injury, evoking worrying memories for Eagles whose former 'keeper Gabriel Wilkinson was seriously injured in a similar looking collision last season.
Eagles striker Darrin Dowling was also taken to hospital with a split lip in the first half after bumping heads with a team-mate.
Chances were few and far between for Eagles throughout the match as they failed up to take advantage of the extra man. If anything, Trojans looked the more likely scorers with Jahmeiko Harvey-Outrbridge missing a glorious chance when clean through, while skipper Jelani Scott saw his penalty saved by substitute 'keeper Tahj Bell after Dwight Basden was hauled down in the box.
Trojans coach Dennis Brown praised the team for their fighting display considering their numerical disadvantage.
"I'm obviously very pleased with the victory," said Brown.
"It was a bad tempered match but Somerset derby games are often like that. Considering we played the entire second half with ten men I thought we coped very well
"The defence kept their discipline and restricted Eagles to not many chances. Desmond Burgess was superb in midfield and Jahi Simmons also had a very good game – he's still a teenager and I look forward to seeing him develop.."
