Parents appear in court after children fail to show up for school

The mothers of three CedarBridge students were pulled before the court yesterday for failing to ensure their children went to school.

Shawnlette Simons, 43 of Rushy Lane, Sandys was fined $50 after pleading guilty of failing to secure that her son went to school between March 1 and May 9.

Her son ? who cannot be named for legal reasons ? missed 61 classes between March 5 and May 10 totalling 12 days absent from school, Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrossen said in Magistrates? Court yesterday.

And between October 2004 and May 2005 he missed a total of 146 classes, making up 28 school days.

Simons told the court her son received 23 stitches in his eye when he began school when a ?bike fell?.

However, she admitted that she left for work at 8 a.m. but CedarBridge started at 8.30 a.m.

?When you go to work he is not going to school,? Magistrate Juan Wolffe said.

The boy?s father, Rudolph Pitcher, stood up in court to say he took his son to school all the time but once he got inside CedarBridge he disappeared.

?Do you want me to leave my job? I put him through the gate. They tell me between the cameras he is disappearing,? Mr. Pitcher said. ?He?s 300 pounds, how am I going to stop him??

When the Magistrate asked if the boy was in court, Mr. Pitcher replied ? ?No, he is in school!?

But Mr. Woolfe said neither the school, nor the courts could be blamed for the fine, as the responsibility for whether children went to school was on the parents .

Simons? son was enrolled at CedarBridge Academy at the start of the 2004/2005 school year, Mrs. Vaucrossen said, however, by October, his attendance dropped until an Attendance Monitoring Officer sent Simons a letter in November.

In March, 2005, they entered a Ministry Attendance Contract, where if there was a breach of the contract then court action will be taken, she said.

Another parent also pleaded guilty to her son being absent from CedarBridge.

Nettie-Anne Woolfe, 45 of Cedar Park, Prospect, Devonshire admitted to failing to secure that her son went to school between March 7 and May 6.

However, Mr. Wolffe declared a possible conflict of interest and she was granted $300 bail to appear for her sentencing today.

However, another CedarBridge mother said her child had been going to school and denied the charge.

Icylin Iris, 39 of Khyber Heights Lane, Warwick pleaded not guilty to failing to insure her child went to school between March 24 and April 29.

Iris was granted bail of $300 to appear for trial on October 26.
