Drunk and hungry man fined for stealing sandwiches

A man caught shoving Hot Pockets in his pants said he stole the frozen sandwiches because he was "lit and hungry".

Peleakhai Williams, 21, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to theft. Crown counsel Kristy-Ann Keillor said an assistant manager at Maximart saw Williams in the frozen food aisle on September 9.

Williams opened the door to a freezer and removed three sandwiches. He shoved two in the front of his pants, before taking the third to the checkout and paying for it. The manager called the Police. The officers approached Williams at a nearby bus station. After a brief search they found the stolen sandwiches in a brown bag held by Williams.

In court on Monday, Williams told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner: "I was lit and hungry, and I didn't have enough money to pay for the other two, so I had to take them."

Mr. Warner fined Williams $300 for the theft and gave him one month to pay.
