Govt. plans crisis talks on visitor road deaths

Government will hold an emergency meeting this week to find ways to make the Island?s roads safer after two visitors were killed on livery cycles within ten days.

Acting Transport Minister Patrice Parris will meet with representatives from the cycle liveries, the Road Safety Council and the Police on Friday.

In a joint press release, Mrs. Parris and Tourism and Transport Minister Ewart Brown expressed their condolences to the families of Rosemary Bigelow and Linda Elizabeth Inman, who lost their lives on Bermuda?s roads.

Mrs. Bigelow, 50, of Pennsylvania, was killed when her scooter hit a tractor trailer on Middle Road as she was leaving Paget Plaza.

And last Thursday, Linda Elizabeth Inman, 50, of Illinois, died shortly after the scooter she was riding with her husband collided with a bus near Mullet Bay, St. George?s.

Mr. Lloyd Inman is currently in stable condition at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Brown, who is off the Island, said of the tragedies: ?It is disturbing when any visitor to Bermuda is injured as the result of a collision, but it is particularly tragic when a person comes here on vacation and has their visit end in such a heartrending manner.

?Having experienced two fatalities in such a short period, I want to ensure that the factors contributing to the collisions are identified as quickly as possible.?

He added: ?There is a perception in the community that it is speed rather than the volume of traffic which is a great contributor to collisions.

?As a result, I have asked the participants of the meeting to look into what can be done regarding both enforcement and education to reduce the average speed of traffic on our roads.?

Oleander Cycles, which rented bikes to both victims, on Friday defended the training given to customers.

But general manager Geoffrey Gibbons also said driving on Bermuda?s roads had become more dangerous.

?It reflects the driving habits of the local population,? he said. ?I think we need to improve the enforcement of the existing traffic laws in regard to the way we all use the roads.?
