Chamber of Commerce executive vice president Diane Gordon has pledged to consider running again for election onto the Corporation of Hamilton after losing out on a seat in Monday's by-election.

Ms Gordon came fifth out of the six candidates contesting the three common councillor seats, polling 83 votes. She emailed her supporters yesterday, thanking them for the calls and messages she had received following her defeat.

"I don't wish to dwell on the results but please let me assure each and every one of you that I am satisfied in my mind why I decided to run and I am also pleased that the voters have chosen three well respected and professional individuals to work as common councillors," she wrote.

Ms Gordon and two of the other candidates, Charles Gosling and John Harvey, agreed together to stand for election on the basis that they had no right to complain about the Corporation unless they were prepared to step up to serve themselves.

Mr. Gosling was the only one of the trio to be elected, gaining the second most votes in the contest (145) after Glen Smith (158/159).

Anne Kast narrowly beat Mr. Harvey to the third seat, receiving 108/109 votes to his 106 votes. Former councillor Graeme Outerbridge got 72/73 votes.

Ms Gordon wrote: "Charles, Anne and Glen will have the backing of myself and the Chamber of Commerce moving forward and I wish them well with the challenges they will be faced with."

She added: "I have been encouraged to run again. If the opportunity presents itself and I have support from my executive and the voters, I will carefully consider it. Meanwhile, I am very appreciative to have Charles, Anne and Glen take up their positions."

Pamela Ferreira became an alderman on Monday meaning another by-election will be held shortly for her now-vacant councillor seat.
