Wade attacks the UBP
Party, Opposition Leader Mr. Frederick Wade told supporters last night.
"The (National) Stadium would remain unfinished,'' he told about 120 Progressive Labour Party supporters at Sandys Secondary School. Immigration policies would be unchanged and "your schools would remain where they are -- in rotten shape''.
Mr. Wade told the crowd to abstain in Government's planned referendum because Independence had to be won in the correct way.
"Independence should usher in a period of change,'' he said.
But if it won Independence, the UBP would continue to support the interests of Front Street.
"They want to use your vote to get Independence to do as they please,'' he said. "They want to do more of the same.'' He noted that South Africa achieved Independence in 1910, but most citizens of the country only recently received their freedom.
Abstaining was a legitimate form of voting which had been used in Jamaica and South Africa among other countries, he said.
Mr. Wade called on Bermuda's business community to examine the PLP's Independence plan, which would involve three general elections and a White Paper.
Business should not be so anxious to jump on to the Government bandwagon which could "lead to anarchy and instability,'' he said.
The Country could not survive another 30 years with many of its people feeling frustrated, he said.
No-one wanted Independence more than he did, but "we have compromised too much'', he said. "The time for compromise is over.'' Also on the panel were Sandys North MP Mr. Eugene Cox and Shadow Home Affairs Minister Mr. Alex Scott. The moderator was Mr. Ewart Brown MP.
Last night's meeting was the second in a series of PLP forums as it spreads the word to supporters to boycott the Independence referendum Government plans to hold this year.
More than 200 supporters came out to the first meeting on April 18, at the Leopards Club in Hamilton.
Former PLP Dr. Roosevelt Brown suffered a severe heart attack in Washington DC earlier this week and is now recuperating after surgery at Howard University Hospital, Dr. Ewart Brown told the meeting.
He said that the PLP activist did not have medical insurance and a collection was taken to go toward his expenses.
