Parish run eagles ragged

A rampaging Hamilton Parish used the Somerset Eagles goalmouth for target shooting yesterday as they blasted through to the next round of the FA Cup.

The Peppers found the mark five times after scything through the Eagles' demoralised defence.

But they should have run up a cricket score against opponents who were clearly outclassed.

Repeatedly, however, they failed to cash in on gilt-edged chances.

It was perhaps not surprising, therefore, it took until the 33rd minute for Parish to start the Wellington Oval rout.

But when it came, it was lapped up by the Peppers' goal-hungry fans.

A huge roar erupted as popular frontman Antwon Darrell headed home inside Eagles' box after a well-taken corner.

By that time Parish could well have been up by five as Zane Stowe, Corey Hill, Irving Burgess and Gerald Place all shot wide inside 20 minutes.

And in the 26th minute Parish seemed certain to open their account after Tyrone Simons handled a back pass inside his six-yard area.

Amazingly, however, they failed to captilise after referee John Bento awarded a free kick just yards from the goal.

Eagles nearly scored a brilliant goal when Antione Brangman flicked on to forward Brian Gibbons, who back-heeled the ball over the goal from 10 yards.

With Parish's front men unable to make their domination pay, it was fitting the second goal should come from defender Sinclair Gibbons, who rifled the ball into the right-hand corner of Simons' goal from around 18 yards.

The 59th-minute strike spurred Parish on to an even greater effort, although they were helped when Eagles dropped down to 10 men after Ricky Dowling was sent off for dangerous play.

Parish's third goal had an element of luck.

Gerald Place clashed with Eagles defender Sam Maybury, and the ball flew 20 yards past the hapless Simons.

There was no doubt, however, Place was determined to claim the 74th-minute goal his own, and he was later backed by referee Bento.

The fourth and fifth goals came as mere formalities in the 80th and 86th minutes, with Corey Hill finishing off as Darrell ran the Eagles defence ragged.
