Holden's tips pay off for Robinson
The man who holds the –31-year-old record for the fastest marathon run in Bermuda, England’s Andy Holden, has given a few training tips to the Island’s Otis Robinson.And if the Southampton runner’s latest performance is anything to go by he set a lifetime best in a 10K race the extra guidance is doing some good.Robinson is currently living in the Birmingham area of England and raced on consecutive days at the weekend, firstly taking part in 5K at Cannon Hill on Saturday where he clocked 17 minutes 28 seconds.But it was his follow-up race on Sunday, when he competed in a high-class 10K in the city of Telford, that saw Robinson fired up and turning in a time of 35.25, which lowered his previous best by 17 seconds.He revealed he has been listening to former Great Britain international athlete Holden, who in his prime won the Bermuda International Marathon three times in 1979, 1980 and 1981.Holden also lives in the Birmingham area, and still coaches with leading road running club Tipton Harriers.The Englishman’s stunning 1980 Bermuda International Marathon record of 2.15.20 has yet to be bettered.As well as Holden, Robinson has met with a number of other Tipton runners and intends to train regularly with the club.He said Holden had offered some training and racing tips. “He told me that he would love to come back to Bermuda,” said Robinson.In the Telford 10K Robinson was 33rd overall. He was just behind first woman and top senior Clare Elms, who came home 32nd.Up ahead two classy African-born runners featured in the top three, with Burundi’s Jean Ndayisenga winning in –29.47 from British runner Neil Gamester in 29.49 and Eritrea’s Biniam Ande, third in 30.26.“The top woman edged me out in the last 20 yards,” Robinson said.“She thanked me at the end [for the competition]. I felt good. The day before I ran 17.25 to finish sixth in a 5K at Cannon Hill.“I looked at my splits in the 10K and I was pretty consistent at 5.40 miles. My slowest was a 5.49 on a hilly section.”n Entry for the Butterfield and Vallis 5k will close on Wednesday, February 2, at 4.45pm.There will be late registration available at the number pick up on Saturday, Feburary 5, which will take place at B&V from 10am, but there will be no late registration on the day of the race.
