Charity is the focus of youth conference
Two officials from the United Nations International School attended the Global Arts Foundation's third annual Youth Conference as observers.
Earlier in the month several students and chaperones went to the UNIS in New York to attend a two-day conference that brings students from around the world to discuss global issues. Yesterday's conference at XL acted as a follow-up to the International one.
This year students were split into groups and told to come up with a proposal asking for $100,000 for a charity. Each group was assigned a philanthropic topic such as health, anti-bullying and youth.
The students were expected to outline their charity, figure out ways to promote it, provide a detailed budget and staffing requirements.
Students from Berkeley Institute, Bermuda High School, Bermuda Institute, CedarBridge Academy and Warwick Academy took part. The UNIS representatives, Jean-Baptist Bassene and Abraham Muslin, said they thoroughly enjoyed their time in Bermuda.
Mr. Bassene said he thought it was wonderful that the Bermuda conference invited students from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds and that it was something the UNIS conference was looking to do in the future. A more detailed report of the Global Arts Youth Conference and the UNIS representatives' visit will appear in Thursday's Young Observer.
