Rude Girls in seventh heaven

Perennial women's soccer powerhouse Rude Girls applied the finishing touches to yet another successful season as they wrapped up a seventh successive league championship on the weekend.

Playing against Dandy Stars at St.John's Field, Rude Girls came away with a convincing 5-2 win to add the league championship to an already impressive haul comprising both the Konica and Charity Cup titles.

Erika Russell spearheaded Rude Girls attack by netting a pair of goals while Ashley Wall, Berne Furbert and Chevonne Furbert scored a goal apiece. Tina Wall converted both goals for Stars.

PHC finished the season as league runners-up while fast improving Hemisphere Royals placed third.

Rude Girls collected eight wins from ten matches with just one defeat and scored a league-leading 47 goals while conceding only nine.

During an eight-year tenure at the helm of a team that has accumulated seven league titles, six Konica Cups, seven Charity Cups and six FA Cups, Rude Girls coach Vance Brown says he's now contemplating moving on. He described his team's seventh successive championship as "the sweetest" of them all.

"No other team has won the league title for as many consecutive years. This was perhaps the best season that we have had in about two years. We had a group of young players come through who performed exceptionally well despite being inexperienced at the club level at the start to the season. They did exceptionally well in picking up after we lost three to four players to college this season," Brown said.

Though he has yet to finalise his immediate plans for the future, Brown said next season he could take on a part-time position at Bermuda Football Association in the capacity of development officer for local women's football.

He said he was unsure who might replace him at Rude Girls in the event that he stood down as coach.

"That hasn't been decided yet. There is still a little ways to go and I am still in the process of considering taking on the role of overall development officer for women's football," explained Brown.

Asked to recollect some of his finest moments with team, Brown rated winning a first league championship in only his second year as coach in 1995/96 as a memorable occasion.

He also takes pride in recruiting aspiring women's talent for college scholarships. To date, Brown has been instrumental in securing scholarships for seven players as a direct result of his links with top college scouts in the US.

"My first season as coach we came second last in the league and then we won it the very next season," he recalled. "And also seeing a total of seven players obtain college scholarships was probably some of my biggest highlights."

Brown was able to establish a strong rapport with some of the movers and shakers of women's football while attending the 1999 Women's World Cup and 2000 Women's CONCACAF Gold Cup in the US.

He believes the local women's game remains on a steady incline and anticipates another successful girls Easter Football Camp which will held at BAA from March 31 to April 4.

"That's all a part of the plan to help women's football grow in Bermuda. It's a total package. You can't just have half of the package. We are getting ready for our second Easter Camp and hopefully it will be even bigger than last year.

"Last year we had around 105 young girls participate and this year we are looking to accommodate even more," added Brown.
