And a meeting between the two sides that was set for 10 a.m. today at Stonington Beach Hotel has been cancelled.

Workers' spokesman Ms Debbie Fox said the meeting -- agreed to after a three-day work stoppage -- fell through because Grotto Bay management would not permit the Bermuda Industrial Union to take part.

"That is our main grievance -- to have union representation,'' Ms Fox told The Royal Gazette . "We feel that it's our constitutional right.'' Hotel resident manager Mr. Clyde Darrell confirmed that today's meeting was off, but would not confirm that management balked at BIU involvement.

"We've asked for the Government Labour Relations Officer (Mr. Edwin Wilson) to assist the employees with one advocate of their choice,'' Mr. Darrell said.

"We want to sit with the employees and work out the grievances.'' Management asked Government to cancel today's meeting, he said. "As far as I'm concerned, it was not firmed up completely.'' Labour and Home Affairs Minister the Hon. Irving Pearman could still send the matter before a Trade Disputes Tribunal.

Many of the hotel's 100 workers walked out on July 12, calling for a return to BIU representation and the mandatory tipping system that management did away with.

They said weekly pay for dining room help had dropped from $700 or $800 to $300.

Complaints of a racial nature were also made about the hotel's Maitre d' Mr.
