It's time to get out the bucket and spade
You'll have a chance to rediscover your inner child at the tenth annual Bermuda Open Sandcastle Competition on Saturday.
The competition, to be held at Horseshoe Bay, Warwick, includes categories for families, children, teenagers, adults, companies and visitors.
"Participants are encouraged to get to the beach as early as possible so as to use their maximum allotted time and claim their goodie bags," said organiser Nicky Gurret.
"Spectators are encouraged to come late and bring a picnic dinner to enjoy the evening sun and view the artwork at a leisurely pace."
Ms Gurret said that she expected the usual enormous crop of fantastic creations to emerge from the sand.
"The creations will delight all who attend the afternoon, which will celebrate the art of sandcastle building and the end of a hot summer," she said.
The Institute of Bermuda Architects is the main sponsor of the event.
"They have been organising the event for the last ten years with myself as the chairperson who has been generously helped by many members," said Ms Gurret. "The Institute of Bermuda Architects have decided that this is the last year that they will be sponsoring the event so all members of the public are encouraged to participate."
Application forms are at the Annex Toy Store on Reid Street. Entry costs $10 for a team of up to five people, and $25 for entry on the day.
Contestants must build a sandcastle in their assigned ten-foot-by ten-foot lot, sand must predominate and building times are between noon and 4 p.m. .
The first 40 entries will receive goodie bags compliments of BGA and Butterfield & Vallis. All who participate will also be provided with refreshments compliments of the Market Place. The first three winners in each category will be awarded trophies and prizes.
In past years people have built everything from whales and sharks to cartoon figures to Gothic-themed sand castles.
