Youth stars gunning for spot in senior squad
Promising all-rounders Oronde Bascome and Malachi Jones are among a number of Bermuda Under-19 national team players enjoying their finest season in top flight cricket.
St.George?s? Bascome scored a first innings century (101) against Western Stars last month and narrowly missed entering his name into the record books by becoming the first local batsmen to score centuries in both innings of a two innings match.
The Saltus Grammar School student was dismissed for 91 in the second innings.
Then last Saturday Bascome helped himself to another century (108) against Willow Cuts at Wellington Oval. And he?s also excelled with the ball, claiming a season-best four for 52 against Stars in the same match.
Jones, meanwhile, has also come on in leaps and bounds following in the footsteps of father Olin at Southampton Rangers.
On Sunday the younger Jones posted a season-best 83 and then returned to grab two wickets for 18 runs off ten overs.
He?s also hit two scores in the 40s against St.David?s and St.George?s.
And it is performances such as these that have not gone unnoticed by Under-19 national coach Andre (Doc) Manders and assistants Herbie Bascome and Clevie (Palmer) Wade.
?It?s very pleasing to see Oronde and Malachi producing and I?m almost certain these guys will be knocking on the senior national squad?s door in the very near future,? Manders told .
Jones is already being tipped to make his Somerset Cup Match debut this summer while Bascome, likewise, continues to impress selectors at the East End.
Both cricketers are members of Bermuda?s Under-19 squad that is currently preparing for next month?s tour of Barbados. They depart on July 7.
However, they aren?t the only two squad members enjoying success as Bailey?s Bay?s Tre Govia and Kearon and Rodney Trott, Devonshire?s Lamont and Derek Brangman, Warwick?s Sean Perinchief and Stephen Bremar jr, Somerset?s Jordon DeSilva and Maurico Bassett, PHC?s Khirby Furbert and Marquel Waldron and St.George?s? Ajaun Lambe (wicketkeeper) and leg spinner Jade Foggo have also performed admirably for their respective clubs.
Bay seamer Kearon Trott claimed five for 52 and three for 28 playing against St.David?s and Somerset over the weekend at Sea Breeze Oval, while Bremar smashed an unbeaten 150 representing Bermuda Under-19s against Haverfield College at the National Sports Centre late last month.
Bremar also toured Trinidad and debuted for the senior national team last April.
?A lot of these guys have been performing consistently well with their teams,? Manders added. ?And I am not surprised in the least because I have observed the way they played last year (on tour of Barbados). Since then I have seen a lot of improvement among the players.
?Herbie (Bascome) and myself have always known it is only a matter of time before some of these players get elevated to the senior national programme.?
Manders anticipates his charges will improve upon last summer?s tour of Barbados this time around.
?I think we will win more games than we did last year,? he added. ?We are basically going down there with the same nucleus of players we had last year and so they will be more aware of the conditions and level of their opponents.?
