Wells and Bell to go head-to-head in friendly clash
Nahki Wells will face his former team-mate Tahj Bell when Carlisle United reserves take on the International Academic (IASA) and Soccer Academy in a friendly match.Earlier this month Wells, an ex-IASA student, signed for United until the end of the season and made his debut in their recent win over Bristol Rovers at Brunton Park.He was recommended to the club by IASA coaching director Mark Ellis, a former Bradford City winger, who said he was looking forward to seeing Wells in action for the League One outfit.“The Carlisle game will be good for the IASA players as they can meet up with Nahki again.“I’m looking forward to seeing him and I’m sure some of the students will be not only anxious to see him too but to play against him now he is a pro,” he said.Over the next few months the IASA side will be playing against several professional teams starting with Leeds tomorrow before meeting Huddersfield, Bolton and Middlesbrough. In addition to the games against English opposition, Ellis will be setting up a game against Motherwell of the Scottish Premier League who are coached by his former Bradford teammate Stuart McCall, who also played for Everton and Scotland.Ellis said: “Stuart has agreed to a game and I’m looking forward to showing him some of the players we have. I just have to confirm the date.”In May the IASA team will travel to Spain where they will visit Barcelona and take on Real Sociedad. The IASA is a UK-based programme where American youngsters can study for a degree and receive football training. Both Wells and Somerset Eagles goalkeeper Bell were recommended to the course by the Bermuda Football Association’s technical director Derek Broadley.Bell, who has attended the IASA since last August, this week returned to the UK after representing Bermuda Under-20s in their World Cup qualifiers in Suriname.Ex-Dandy Town striker Wells will be hoping to be included in Carlisle’s first team squad for Saturday’s home match against Oldham.Carlisle boss Greg Abbott told the News and Star yesterday he was determined to bolster his squad to give it the staying power for a promotion push.Three successive victories and a trio of clean sheets have transformed Carlisle’s season and rekindled their hopes of a Wembley and promotion double. They have to fit in midweek League One trips to Yeovil and Leyton Orient after both games were postponed due to the weather, plus the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy northern final second leg against Huddersfield and a possible play-off campaignBut Abbott, who is armed with cash from the sale of striker Gary Madine to Sheffield Wednesday, is concerned his current squad may not be strong enough to cope with a packed fixture list before the end of the season.“I still think the squad needs to be strengthened despite the recent results,” said Abbott. “We need more strength in depth as we have some unbelievable midweek journeys.“It is really important that we find the right type of player and the right type of person, and that is never easy so there is a lot of work going into it, and it might end up going right to the wire.”
