New road safety measures expected tomorrow
The Police may announce new road safety measures tomorrow following the deaths of three people in just five days.
The Bermuda Police Service met with the Road Safety Council yesterday to discuss the issue and an announcement is expected tomorrow.
In the meantime, Road Safety Council chairman Dr. Christopher Johnson has appealed to all motorists to take extra care on the Island's roads.
Dr. Johnson said: "We are urging everyone to be more cautious, especially on rainy days like these, and to be aware that we have seven deaths this year and so are well ahead, statistically. There are a number of factors to be mindful of, but the most important one is not to drink-drive and also, to watch your speed. We are appealing to motorists and to people on bikes to be more aware of this."
@$:Premier Dr. Ewart Brown, in response to the recent deaths, said: "Let me start off by expressing my condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives on our roads during the past week or so."
Dr. Brown, who was in Pittsburgh on Government business continued: "We've repeated the message, but it's worth repeating again: We have to be more careful, we have to be more cautious and we must avoid drinking and driving.
"And I'm not saying that drinking and driving was connected to these recent deaths, but I'm urging the Bermudian motoring public to just be more careful.
"We have more vehicles on our roads now than ever before and it is most important that we exercise caution." Police are growing increasingly concerned at the number of accidents on Bermuda's roads. There were 11 road fatalities in 2007, but in the first four months of this year alone, there have been seven deaths.
On Monday, 23-year-old Kitina Simmons lost her fight for life after suffering serious head injuries when her car overturned and struck a wall in the early hours of Thursday.
