TCD gearing up for a complete overhaul

Pot luck: Motorists claim TCD is inconsistent in applying its licensing requirements when vehicles are tested.

A new look Transport Control Department could soon be a reality, with the current building in North Street demolished and turned into a parking lot and waiting lanes leading into a drive-through emission testing centre.

The present one-storey building will be flattened and replaced by a similar sized TCD building slightly to the west.

However, the new building will have two floors and includes three testing bays where vehicles drive in and out to be examined and have exhaust emissions tested.

At the far west of the site will be a bike licence test area and a separate car licence test area as well as staff parking.

The new TCD building will be constructed behind hoardings and once completed the existing building will be demolished.

Plans have been lodged by Bermuda Emissions Control to replace the existing facility with a new building and a re-designed layout for parking, waiting and testing at the current North Street site.

Car parking spaces will increase from 60 to 107, with space for a further 79 bikes.

The new TCD will have a waiting room with 30 seats. It will have a total floor area of 19,516 sq ft compared to the present 8,965 sq ft.

Blueprints created by Cooper & Gardner Architects show drive-in lanes for vehicles waiting to be tested in the three indoor testing bays, and also a truck testing waiting area.

New sidewalks will be created on either side of North Street outside the TCD compound.

The application has been submitted to the Department of Planning for consideration.
