last night over the controversial Wilkinson Quarry expansion.

They were made by Bermuda Perfumery owner Mr. Colin Curtis, who said a June notice of the development escaped attention because it was listed under the street address of the quarry.

Some 80 people, including Environment Minister the Hon. Gerald Simons, attended the meeting, chaired by Shadow Environment Minister Rev. Trevor Woolridge.

Ducks Puddle condo owners raised fears that the quarry expansion would further increase noise, dust and traffic levels and lead to devaluation of their homes.

And cave explorers and conservationists raised grave concerns over possible destruction of popular Admiral's Cave and its underground waterways through blasting and quarrying.

Mr. Curtis presented a photograph taken by helicopter of what he claimed showed was "already an intrusion onto the cave''.

He also said that importing aggregate -- which Bermuda already does -- was "a small price to pay'' to avoid further destruction of the environment.

Defending the plan, Mr. David Summers representing Wilkinson Quarry said the quarry had been in existence long before Ducks Puddle was developed.

He added one condition of the expansion was that no section of the quarry should be within 130 feet of any building at Duck's Puddle or within 60 feet of Admiral's Cave.
