Around the Bermuda Courts
An American visitor was this week charged in Magistrates' Court with sexually assaulting a local woman.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been in Bermuda looking for employment and is accused of preying on a woman in Paget on April 3.
Crown counsel Paula Tyndale raised a number of objections to bail - submissions which were upheld by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner despite the protestations of the man's lawyer Richard Horseman.
The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge in the lower court and was remanded into custody until April 19, when he will reappear for mention.
Chef finds himself in hot water
A 40-year old chef got himself into a bit of a stew in Magistrates' Court this week when he was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined $1,000 for drunk driving.
Neil Hodden, who works at Sapori restaurant in Paget, was stopped by Police on Wednesday February 2 near Trimingham Hill roundabout. Submitting to a breathalyser test, Hodden was found to be close to three times over the legal limit - 220 milligrams in 100 milligrams of blood.
He conceded to Police at the time he had been enjoying “a few pints” and was quick to apologise for his actions in front of Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.
Homeless man jailed for theft
A homeless man with a drinking problem has been jailed for nine months after admitting stealing $11 from two parked cars.
Richard Michael Dill, 36, took $5 in loose change from a car parked in Royal Gardens, Sandys on March 13 but was confronted by a Policeman, Robin Sherwood, after he tried to steal from his car next door.
Dill managed to run off to a nearby golf course with $7 but was later caught.
Dill told the court this week he suffered from a drinking problem and was getting help at Camp Spirit.
But Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner pointed out that Dill, who had numerous similar offences, had already flunked Drug Court.
