Civic Ballet makes Festival debut

The Bermuda Civic Ballet (BCB) makes its Bermuda Festival debut this evening with the first of two performances of the three-act ballet 'Coppélia' at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts.

Originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon and set to music by fellow Russian Leo Delibes, the ballet portrays the story of eccentric dollmaker Dr. Coppelius and his life-like doll; Franz, who becomes infatuated with the doll; and his fiancée Swanilda, who devises a plot to find out whether or not Franz really loves her.

The Bermuda Civic Ballet first performed Coppélia at City Hall theatre in 1983.

The current production is directed by BCB director Coral Waddell, in conjunction with Bermudian consultant Ray Tanva, who has lived in London since the 1950s fulfilling a career in dance, costuming and haute couture.

Both performances will feature Amy Hollingsworth, Cameron McMillan and David Drummond in the principal roles of Swanilda, Franz and Dr. Coppelius, respectively. Curtain time is 8 p.m.

Education has always been a BCB cornerstone. Collaboration between local and overseas talent continues to serve the original intent of those behind the registered charity's creation in 1972.

Many of its young dancers went on to successful professional careers following their experiences with Civic, and last year the Company celebrated its 35th anniversary with a special production of 'La Fille Mal Gardée' in the Botanical Gardens.

Mrs. Waddell is also director of the School of Russian Ballet.
