Man linked to drug smuggling woman admits cannabis charge

Jason Wayne Fox, 35, admitted trying to smuggle $22,000 worth of cannabis into Bermuda on a flight from Canada.

A man who roped a female friend into smuggling more than $22,000 worth of cannabis into Bermuda is facing jail after pleading guilty.Jason Fox, 35, of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was stopped at LF Wade International Airport on June 16 last year.He and his friend Kezia DeSilva, 23, had arrived on the WestJet flight from Toronto.Prosecutor Robert Welling told Supreme Court this week that a sniffer dog detected traces of drugs on a bag on the luggage carousel. The bag had Fox’s name on it but was picked up by DeSilva who was then challenged and detained by Customs officers. When they searched her, they found 447.5 grams of cannabis strapped to her legs underneath her skirt.Fox went through Immigration unscathed but was called back by officials after the drugs were discovered.Mr Welling said: “He sought very much to put distance between himself and Kezia DeSilva. It’s the Crown’s case he was in on this, assisted her bringing this in. He paid for her ticket knowing she would do this, and gave her money knowing she would probably purchase the drugs to bring them in.”The prosecutor added that Fox’s DNA was found inside and outside the packages of drugs.Fox, who has dual Bermudian and Canadian citizenship, pleaded guilty yesterday, on the day his trial was due to begin, to possessing the cannabis with intent to supply. He denied conspiring to import the drugs, which the prosecutor accepted.DeSilva, from Bermuda, admitted last year to possessing the drugs with intent to supply and was jailed.Mr Welling asked Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves to remand Fox into custody after his pleas, noting: “I think it’s inevitable that a custodial sentence will be imposed.”The judge did so, and ordered pre-sentence reports. A date for the sentencing will be fixed when Fox returns to court on February 1.
