Catlin Group Limited has donated $1 million to the Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust’s (BHCT) fundraising campaign. The charity is hoping to raise $40 million to help transform King Edward VII Memorial into a world-class facility by next year. The Why it Matters capital campaign has raised $28 million towards that effort since it was launched in April 2011.Catlin chief executive Stephen Catlin said: “The new acute care wing will be a state-of-the-art facility that the Island can be very proud of. All of us at Catlin are delighted to provide financial support to this important campaign that will help the entire Bermuda community.”Co-chair of BHCTs International Companies Committee, Rees Fletcher added: “International business is a significant part of the Bermuda community and we are grateful to Catlin Group Ltd for its support.“It’s been exciting to see the entire community come together for this, the largest fundraising effort in the island’s history, to help rebuild KEMH as an exceptional centre of care for everyone who calls Bermuda home.”Now in its 26th month, the three-year campaign is reaching across the community asking everyone to play their part in contributing to the “revitalised, state-of-the-art hospital, and to the best healthcare for Bermuda”.As the largest fundraising effort in the Island’s history, the campaign will raise the needed down payment for the new hospital currently under construction.Upon completion of the new acute care wing, patients and visitors will benefit from an “exceptional medical facility, matched by an exceptional standard of clinical practice and patient-centred care”.The Trust advises and raises funds for BHB, while managing the distribution of donations to areas of need.BHB chief executive officer Venetta Symonds said: “All of us at BHB are grateful to Catlin for this donation. At BHB we are working hard to prepare our services for the transition to the new acute care wing, which will take place in June next year.“It is exciting to see the new wing emerge from behind the scaffolding and know that we are so close to opening the doors to a new standard of care to Bermuda. The generosity of the donors to this campaign will benefit all the community in the decades to come.”Catlin’s is the second $1 million donation to date.
